VP Asphalt Paving

We needed a new asphalt driveway at our home in Prospect, CT and after getting four estimates from paving contractors in the Prospect and Wolcott area, we went with VP Asphalt Paving. Really glad we did. Vic came out personally, walked the driveway with us, and was the only contractor who actually took the time to explain that we had a drainage and settling issue under our existing pavement that needed to be corrected before anything new could go down. The others just quoted us a number. Vic walked us through exactly what was causing the problem, what the fix would involve, and why skipping that step would mean the new driveway would not last. That kind of honesty and expertise is hard to find. Once we gave the go ahead, the crew showed up on time, handled the drainage correction, laid a proper compacted gravel base, and finished with a clean asphalt surface that looks excellent. We live on East Flat Hill Road, and our driveway runs about 150 feet downhill to the road, which around here means water sits at the bottom of it every time it rains. After going through last winter it looked really bad with cracks running c across our driveway in three or four places. There was also a soft spot near the mailbox where the snow plow had caught the edge, and the whole surface had turned color. My husband called three paving contractors in April. Two of them told me to repave the entire driveway. VP Asphalt Paving was the third. The other reason we went with VP was my son recommended them very highly, which helped in with making our final decision... Vick Pagona came out, walked the full length of it with me, and said the pavement itself was still sound and that the problem was that nobody had ever filled the major cracks, so water had been getting underneath them for years. Vick said the low end needed some patching, not a new driveway. He was straight with me that a coat of sealer wasn't going to fix the water sitting at the bottom, and he chalked out the wet area so I could see exactly what he meant. The crew arrived the third week of May, filled a bit over sixty feet of crack, and left it at that. Came back the following week once we'd had a dry stretch and did the patch and two coats of sealer. He'd told me from the start they wouldn't coat over anything damp, and he stuck to it even though it meant pushing us a few days when the rain came through. Two mornings of actual work. Cleaned up both times, taped off the entrance so nobody drove on it. That was a year and a half ago now. Still black, still tight, and the cracks haven't come back through. The bottom end still holds water when it pours, but that's the grade of the land and he told me that on day one. No surprises, which is more than I can say for most contractors.
