One thing to know up front: White Street Auto Diagnostic is an automotive repair garage on White St in Haverhill — cars, not houses. The inspections people come for are Massachusetts vehicle stickers, and the shop is also a local Smart Start ignition-interlock provider, which is how at least one customer found it. It is a family operation, and reviewers name the family constantly: Robin in the office, her sons Shaun and Ryan turning wrenches. The BBB profile puts the business at 32 years, started in 1994, with four employees, and grades it A+ — though it is not BBB accredited, which simply means the shop never applied. The through-line across 126 Google ratings averaging 4.7 is restraint. The word customers keep reaching for is honest, and they mean something specific by it: the shop doesn't pile on work you didn't come in for. One long-time interlock customer wrote that despite a visibly rough vehicle, nobody has ever tried to upsell — and when he finally asked for an AC compressor quote, the price surprised him in the other direction, with no objection to him supplying his own parts. Another driver pulled in with a sticker that had already expired and was taken care of on the spot. The bad reviews are worth reading rather than dismissing. They cluster on the same theme from the other side: a customer who felt an estimate was inflated and pushed back on it, and one who found the shop hard to reach for follow-up on work already done. These are older, and the last six months have brought seven reviews with nothing negative in them — but if you are coming in for a diagnosis rather than a sticker, get the estimate itemized and ask whether parts are being sourced through a dealer or an aftermarket supplier, since that is exactly what the dispute turned on. For a routine inspection, an oil change, brakes, or interlock calibration, this is a small shop with a long Haverhill history and a lot of second-generation customers. For a large repair, price the parts line separately before you approve it.

I started going to White Street because they are the only local Smart Start provider. Just looking at my vehicle you can tell it needs work but they have never tried to upsell me. When I finally asked for a quote for something other than my monthly interlock calibration, an AC compressor replacement, I was shocked by how reasonable their pricing was. They didn’t even have a problem with me supplying my own parts. I can’t understand how anyone can rate them less than 4/5 stars and the one bad review I saw doesn’t sound like them at all (even if it was true, everyone’s entitled to a bad day). They have made a long-term customer out of me just by by providing professional services at a reasonable price, and being decent people who treat me well. Thanks for your work!
