Winters Home Services is a Watertown plumbing-and-HVAC company with a genuinely large footprint — 2,879 Google ratings averaging 4.8 stars and 842 reviews on file since 2023 — built mostly on named technicians doing careful, explained work: Sean fixing a leaky shower and being called the best plumber a customer had used in 20 years of homeownership, John staying on a job for 12 hours straight, Andrew Guilfoyle replacing an attic AC unit 'flawlessly,' and Lucas walking a customer through a 20-year-old furnace's options and negotiating a 10-year warranty into the deal. The clearest recent theme in the reviews, though, is an ownership change. Several 2026 reviews describe Winters being sold to another company, HL Bowman, and a number of them report the service getting noticeably worse since — an AI chatbot standing in for a live person and curter phone interactions. One long-time customer wrote that after 'many years of being a satisfied customer, the service experience has become terrible' following the sale. In a December 2025 review, a customer described a technician who 'refused to even look' at a furnace despite their gas usage having tripled since an earlier repair. Pricing is the other recurring friction point. One customer said a recent quote came in at three times four competitors' bids; another described being quoted roughly $2,600 to fix a barely-leaking water filter and called it a scam. In a December 2025 review, a customer already on an annual service contract described being charged over $500 to install a $443 faucet they'd bought themselves. In a 2024 review, another described the company refusing to return for a follow-up visit — citing an unexplained 'company policy' — after learning a different technician had been out a month earlier. None of this erases the volume of specific, positive accounts on file — most of the recent reviews still describe technicians who show up on time, explain what they're doing, and occasionally waive a charge when a fix turns out to be quick. But the acquisition-linked complaints span multiple, independent reviewers describing the same shift, which is worth weighing more heavily than any single review score would suggest on its own. The company's Massachusetts plumbing license is verified active. For routine plumbing and HVAC work, the long track record of named, well-reviewed technicians still holds up; given the recent ownership change, it's worth getting a written, itemized quote before any bigger job and asking directly whether pricing or service policies have changed since the HL Bowman acquisition.
Way way over priced. They gave me a quote for 3 times the amount of 4 other companies. Don’t trust their prices!
Ok, I just had the nicest service provider at my home, and because of him I will 100% always call Winters in the future! Gordon was so helpful and friendly and nice!
After many years of being a satisfied customer, the service experience has become terrible. Winters sold to another company, HL Bowman. The service is awful. Customer service is an AI-chat bot first. When you eventually get a live person, they are rude. HL Bowman has now missed the appointment windows twice in a row. It is frustrating to take a day to work at home and have them not show up or be hours later than the 4-hour window they give. I miss the local, old Winters service. I am requesting a refund on the remainder of my maintenance plan. I will be finding another company. I am incredibly frustrated and disappointed. I would recommend finding a better HVAC company and one that is local, rather than a private equity roll-up from out-of-state.
Both were very nice and patient with me.
Mike was great! He triaged the issues from most urgent to least and gave great educational info regarding the matters.
