Woodworks Custom Homes is a family-run design-build outfit in Wellesley, founded in 2011 by Gil Mendes, that mostly shows up in gut renovations — full kitchens, master baths, and whole-home remodels rather than single-room touch-ups. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, matching the number the company itself lists on Angi. Recent Google reviews describe well-run big projects: a 2024 review calls project manager Jonatas "an absolute dream to work with" on a gut renovation of a kitchen and 2.5 bathrooms, praising clear scope and pricing and crediting the crew with throwing in recessed lighting at no charge. Other homeowners describe repeat work — a second project redesigning a master bathroom and adding closets, and one client who used Gil's team for both a Newton gut renovation and a Boston condo floor replacement. That said, not every project has gone smoothly. In a February 2026 review, a homeowner who bought a home Woodworks had fully renovated in 2020 — new electric, HVAC, and plumbing throughout — said they've since spent thousands correcting bad electrical, HVAC, and plumbing work, and that Gil didn't take responsibility even after one of his own referred contractors flagged the original HVAC install as subpar. Worth asking about directly: how systems work (electrical, HVAC, plumbing) is inspected and warrantied on a full renovation, given that account.
Gil did a complete reno of the home we purchased in 2020. New electric, HVAC, plumbing, everything. We have since spent thousands of dollars correcting bad electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. We tried for quite some time to get Gil to take some accountability but with no success. Even one of the contractors he suggested and uses stated how poorly the original HVAC install was and Gil still wouldn't cover any of the cost to fix the subpar initial install. Gil was nice to work with but the work itself ended up being quite poor and unfortunately and he simply has not accepted any responsibility for the poor quality of work.
Nicest group of people you’ll ever meet. Gil has an A + team.
We had a pretty big project: gut renovation of our kitchen and 2.5 bathrooms. Jonatas, the project manager, is an absolute dream to work with: professional, communicative, present, detail-oriented, and committed to seeing things through even when the inevitable hiccups arise, such as vendor delays that are outside Woodworks' or our control. Woodworks was transparent and very clear about the scope of work and pricing (very reasonable), and went above and beyond, doing things for us that weren't included in the contract (such as installing recessed lighting as a courtesy, where we hadn't thought about doing it) and the contractors were all respectful of our space. We are so happy to have found the people we will go to for our future projects from here on out! Thank you, Woodworks, for helping us get our dream home!
I was extremely pleased with the addition work that was done on my home.
We could not recommend Gil and his team more. We used Gil for a complete gut renovation project at our home in Newton and to replace floors in our Boston condo. Both times, Gil and his team went above and beyond to make the process seamless and smooth. Their attention to detail and professionalism is unmatched. We will never use another contractor and look forward to future projects together.
