Sixty-four years at one Westport storefront, three generations of the same family — that is what A.B.C. Floor Covering leads with, and the dates line up. The company says it opened in 1962 and is now in its third generation; its Better Business Bureau profile puts the start date at January 1962 as well, with five employees and Michael Rodrigues as president. What they do is straightforward: carpet, hardwood, laminate, ceramic tile, linoleum, rubber tile and vinyl, sold and installed for both houses and commercial spaces, out of 753 State Road. Public reviews are scarce. Google shows 4.8 stars from nine ratings, and only one of them carries any text: in May 2026 a customer described a marine carpet fitted in a boat cabin, credited Bill for the attention to detail and Mike for planning the job, and said the pricing was competitive and did not break the bank. A nice, specific note — and it is one note. The BBB side reads stronger: accredited since July 2014, an A+ grade, and no complaints listed. Two things are worth raising before you call. BuildZoom carries an unverified Rhode Island residential contractor registration (#1446) for the company that it last saw expiring in June 1993, and it scores the business a 0 on the grounds that no active licence is on file — though flooring-only work is not a trade Massachusetts requires home improvement registration for, so the question to ask is about registration for any job across the line in Rhode Island. And in December 2010, South Coast Today reported the company, co-owned by Rodrigues, among the defendants in a Westport billboard dispute over property where it keeps storage. The owner is a public figure. State House News in 2024 and the Berkshire Eagle in 2015 both identify Rodrigues, the Senate Ways and Means chairman, as the man who runs the shop, and he has written about the family business himself, calling it formative. In 2024 the company sponsored a beverage cart at a charity golf tournament for a children's diabetes camp. For a straightforward flooring supply-and-install around Westport, this is a long-established local shop with a clean BBB file. Ask for recent local references and a written scope, since so few customers have written anything publicly about a business this old.
