American Bath Works is a Mendon-based bathroom (and occasionally kitchen) remodeling company that does full gut-to-the-studs renovations, handling its own plumbing, tile, and carpentry rather than subcontracting those trades out. It's currently run by Lester Sodre, a civil engineer originally from Brazil who, according to a 2026 Reddit thread, worked at the company before buying it. The reviews — 28 on file from 2023 to 2026 across six platforms — describe the same experience over and over: full bathroom remodels finished on budget and on schedule, with Lester and a small, consistent crew (Alvaro, Dan, Jack, and Henry come up repeatedly) doing careful, detail-oriented work. This spring, one customer described a complete "gut to the studs" master bathroom renovation as exceptional from start to finish; this summer, another praised the team's communication and workmanship on a new bathroom build. In a 2025 review, one customer said ABW expanded a small primary bathroom into an adjoining walk-in closet and added two new closets and a bench seat; in a 2024 review, another described transforming three outdated bathrooms into modern ones while managing every preference along the way. Multiple reviews single out cleanliness and care during construction — protecting hardwood floors outside the work area, keeping dust contained, and sticking to the quoted price and timeline. A few customers came back for a second or third bathroom after a first project went well, and Angi puts the star distribution at 93% five-star out of 29 ratings. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, held under American Bath Works, Inc., is verified active. The company's own site lists additional individual license numbers for plumbing and construction supervision, though those aren't independently verified here. Worth noting: BuildZoom's profile lists the owner as Stephen Dennis, which doesn't match Lester Sodre, the current owner described in recent reviews and a Reddit thread — likely a directory record that hasn't caught up with a change in ownership. For a full bathroom renovation, especially a gut-to-the-studs job, the track record here is deep and consistently positive.
“I believe so! My projects were total renos so everything was stripped down to the studs. I definitely recommend reaching out! The company owner Lester Sodre is super friendly, reliable, and knowledgeable (he’s a civil engineer from Brazil, he worked at ABW before buying the company from the previous owner who retired)! Everyone on the team is amazing too!”
“I CANNOT recommend this company highly enough: American Bath Works”
We talked to those one day TV conversion people, and due to their pricing we almost gave up on our idea. We then talked with Lester at American Bath Works from Mendon MA. We loved the arrangement, we picked out and purchased the tile, grout, doors, etc, and they did the bathtub removal and tile install. Lester helped guide us thru the material selection process, and communication was very good. Work was excellent, and we now have a tile shower for under two thirds the cost of those one day people. So if you have a second bath you can use for the week or so it will take, this entity is the one to use. Well done Lester and American Bath Works!
We had a great experience with American Bath Works. Lester and his team were professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. Communication was excellent throughout the project, and they kept us informed every step of the way. The workmanship was outstanding, and our new bathroom turned out beautifully—exactly what we wanted. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend American Bath Works to anyone considering a bathroom renovation.
We recently had our master bathroom completely renovated by Lester at American Bath Works, and the experience was exceptional from start to finish. This was a full "gut to the studs" project, and we couldn't be happier with the decision to work with him. Throughout the process, Lester was a true pleasure to work with. One of the things we appreciated most was his transparency regarding costs; he made sure we fully understood how our various design decisions impacted the budget following the initial quote. There were no surprises, which made a complex renovation much less stressful. Communication was also a major plus. Lester was incredibly prompt and thorough with his answers whenever we had questions or concerns. The results are truly better than we could have hoped for. My wife and I are now enjoying an incredible upgrade in our master bath. The entire staff was professional, and the fit and finish of the work is top-tier. If you are looking for high-quality craftsmanship and a professional, communicative partner for your next project, we highly recommend working with Lester.
Lester and his crew are very professional and talented. I would recommend them to everyone. Bathroom looks great.
