An April 2024 Angi reviewer hired a contractor and, as they tell it, got lucky — the chimney work was subcontracted to Brendan Avery, whom that review calls "a chimney-building legend." Chimneys sit at the middle of this company's story: rebuilds, stainless liners, new caps, and leaks traced back to flashing. Avery's Masonry, Chimney Work & Repair is based in Waltham and, by the company's own account, owner-operated by Brenden Avery with over 12 years as a mason. The work list runs past chimneys and fireplaces to patios, stairs, walkways, retaining walls and general masonry restoration, with free estimates and a stated guarantee of five years on new work and three on repairs. Twenty-six written accounts sit on Angi and HomeAdvisor, dated 2023 through 2025, and what they repeat most is how fast he turns up — ten mention a call back right away, an estimate the same day, or arriving when he said he would. In an April 2023 review, a homeowner with a leaky chimney said Avery got back to them immediately and looked at it on his way home that night, then found flashing problems and no flue lining while he was up on the roof. A December 2023 customer wrote that Brendan and Michael rebuilt their chimney and added a cap, took just one day to do it, and sent pictures through the process. The larger jobs are described in the same detail. A January 2023 homeowner had a leaning fireplace rebuilt from the roofline up, the chimney relined with a stainless liner and a new cap installed. A December 2024 customer had a fan installed and the fireplace and hearth tiled; in November 2025, another was juggling tiling, a surround rebuild and plastering for a new fireplace look alongside an oil flue liner problem. It isn't all chimney work either — a January 2023 review describes old front rock stairs removed and a new staircase built in their place. Two things worth pinning down. How long the company has been at this depends on where you look: its own site says over 12 years of masonry experience, while both the Angi and HomeAdvisor profiles state seven. And the written history runs 2023 to 2025, all of it on those two directories. For a chimney that's leaking, leaning or due for a liner — or front steps that need to come out and go back in — Avery is a straightforward call. Get the five-year and three-year guarantees written into the estimate, and ask for the roof photos earlier customers described before you agree to the scope.
I Highly recommend Brendan of Avery Masonry. I had a contractor coordination dilemma, between tiling, surround rebuilding, plastering around the surround to create a new fireplace look. I also had issues with my oil flu liner. He saved me from contractors overselling work that didn't need to be done and those contractors that where not able to handle all parts of the redesign. He became the "general contractor" for my project and did an excellent job! Thank you Brendan.
I went with this company because I can tell the contractor had a passion for chimneys. He was informative, detail oriented, flexible and reasonable. He did a great job! My wife and I are happy with his work and I would definitely recommend his company to anyone!
Brendan is very good at answering calls/ getting back to customers. He did a great job installing the fan, tiling the fireplace and hearth. Very happy I went with him. I would absolutely contact him again for fireplace maintenance and I would recommend him to others.
These guys are great. Incredibly fast and efficient.
