There were many different parts to the job Step and Stone did for us recently and they did them all very well. Here's a list: patched and built a support wall to repair a crumbling 15 foot section of fieldstone foundation; leveled a walkway that was being distorted by roots pushing up from below; installed about 200 feet of granite cobblestones along the sides of walkways around our house; directed a downspout away from the house which involved breaking through a concrete section of a walk; patched brickwork both inside and outside our brick garage; resurfaced the flat roof of our garage. Benjamin, the owner of the company, is a friendly guy who was quite easy to work with and quickly responsive when texting. His prices were very fair, and his 2 workers, David and Aldo, were extremely skilled and cooperative. Obviously Step and Stone deserves my highest recommendation.

We were quoted $2500 for repair and repoint of our chimney. We received this quote two separate occasions. Work started on 12/19 and everything seemed to be going well with the 2 workers on the roof. Then, I was informed by the supervisor that the bricks would all need to be replaced. Okay, bricks are not expensive- or so I thought. I was informed that we would need to wait for the boss to arrive. An hour or so later, the Boss B. Oreilly arrived. Mr. Oreilly informed me that my chimney would have to be torn down and rebuilt. Please keep in mind that the workers already removed the mortar or whatever its called… so I have a situation indeed. And even though he did not care about the money- it would cost me $10,500 with a 20-year warranty. Ummmm, what? We went back and forth for at least 20 minutes. The cost went to 9500, then 6000, then 5000. And the years of warranty went down as well. Mr Oreilly was rather frantic and emphasized that he was stressed and overly busy and, if I paid the extra money, he could get 10 guys here right away… ummm, 10 guys will not fit on my roof. He asked how much I can afford and I remined him that I could barely afford the $2500 that was originally quoted by his company, the professional who looked at my chimney, up close on 2 separate occasions. I felt as if I was given the bait and switch which is not good business etiquette. I also felt like I was being swindled because I am a woman. Finally, Mr. Oreilly agreed to do the bare minimum and ensure that my chimney would last 2-5 years (for the originally quoted $2500. Oh, I had to re-write the check in his personal name, not the company name. The 2 original workers would stay and complete the job. Okay. Job was completed in about 2 hours – even though they had been on site for about 4 hours. The supervisor came to show me pictures and stated ‘looks like brand new! And should last you 15 years.’ Amazingly- they utilized the original bricks. Ummmm, will it last 15 years or the 2-5 years that your boss Mr. Oreilly informed me about….? How do I even know? My thoughts- be careful with this business as I was being pushed to pay $8,000 more than initially quoted. I literally did not have that money and I was made to feel uncomfortable because of it. I will be contacting the BBB as well.
