Back Bay Mechanical is a Braintree HVAC company people call for heat pump installs, AC repairs, and the kind of "is that a gas smell" moment that can't wait. Its own site describes itself as a Boston-area outfit handling residential heating, cooling, and indoor air quality work, with 24/7 emergency service. Google backs that up with real volume: a 5.0-star average across 113 ratings. That average isn't built on a handful of reviews — it spans roughly 100 reviews across five different sites from 2023 through 2026, and the tone barely wavers over that stretch. This March, a new homeowner who thought they smelled gas got someone out right away and came away calling the visit professional, knowledgeable, and fairly priced. Several other reviewers, going back further, describe using the company across multiple properties or over several years — the kind of repeat business that's harder to fake than a one-off five-star review. Pricing is the one thing worth asking about before booking. A January review praised the technician, Chris, for solid diagnostic work, but the same customer was taken aback by a $535 charge for a thermostat that runs closer to $150 retail, on top of a separate $149 installation fee. It's a single account, not a pattern, but specific enough to be worth an itemized quote up front. Separately, the company's BBB file is brand new — opened within the last six months — so there's no BBB rating or complaint history to check yet. Its Massachusetts HVAC license is active. Between the license, the volume of consistent reviews, and the range of work described — heat pump replacements, AC repairs, furnace and thermostat jobs — Back Bay Mechanical looks like a reasonable call for HVAC work in the Boston area. Just ask for a parts-and-labor breakdown up front, especially on anything beyond a basic repair.

I just moved into a new place & thought I smelled gas so Back Bay Mechanical sent someone right out to check for me. Very professional, knowledgeable and fair priced. I highly recommend.

Through the years, I’ve been pleased with Back Bay Mechanical. Even recently, Chris, the technician knew what he was doing, took time to assess the situation and to solve problems. Additionally, he was pleasant, polite, thorough and professional.
That said, when I received my bill, I was stunned by the exorbitant cost, $535.00, that BBM charged for a thermostat which can be purchased online or in stores for $385.00 less than what I was charged. (plus there was an additional $149.38 installation fee)
[Best Buy and Walmart $139.99, HVAC Home Safety $131.50, Amazon $149.99 }
Prior to my appointment, my thermostat had not been working properly so, in anticipation, I purchased one exactly like the one I had. But later, based on conversations with the technician and my neighbor, I switched to the Honeywell T6 . When I received my bill, I was shocked to see a charge of $535.00 for a thermostat that other websites charge no more than $150.00.
Through phone calls and emails, I requested BBN adjust the charge. Crickets.
In short, I think paying $535.00, a $385.00 or more markup for a $149.99 thermostat, is usurious price gouging.

We hired Back Bay Mechanical to replace an HVAC unit in our brownstone condo in the South End. We found them after trying two other prominent service providers who were either terrible at follow up/communication or couldn't deal with an HVAC install in an old building. From start to finish, the Back Bay team was great. They clearly knew what they were doing, were comfortable navigating the peculiar space limitations of the building design, acquired the right equipment fairly quickly, and the install went super smooth. They were organized and clean, and communicated well throughout the project. When they left, it was like they had never been there (except we finally had reliable heat). They even rehung the drop ceiling where the interior unit was replaced. We will definitely be using them for maintenance going forward, and would highly recommend them to others.

Came quickly and did what they said they would for the price quoted.

What a great company. Recently had new heat pumps, thermostats, and fans installed by Back Bay. The owner Keith, was easy to talk to and obviously knowledgeable. The installers were very professional, efficient and cleaned up after. Everyone at the office, who I was in contact with by phone or email, is very nice and helpful. Truly, I felt I was in good hands with them.
