One review, written in 2014, and a painter's licence that ran out in 2021. That is the whole public record of Balan Painting. It is a small residential painting business in Greenfield, in western Massachusetts, run by Petru Balan — BuildZoom spells him Peter and lists a second owner, Francis Perkins. The work it advertises is exterior: house painting and staining, paint removal, and a metal roofing service. Its one written account, from a customer in 2014, is positive, and no complaint has ever been filed against it with the Better Business Bureau. The licensing is the part to resolve before hiring. BuildZoom lists painter licence number 156626 as expired since July 2021, and says it re-checked in March 2026 and found it still expired. The same number appears again on that page as a home improvement contractor registration that Massachusetts Consumer Affairs recorded as cancelled. BuildZoom scores the company 0 and flags it with an alert for exactly this reason — it cannot confirm an active licence. None of that has been checked against the Commonwealth's own records here, so treat it as BuildZoom's account rather than a settled fact, but it is worth asking about directly. Massachusetts exempts interior-painting-only work from home improvement contractor registration, but exterior painting and roofing fall outside that exemption, and a registration that existed and lapsed is a different situation from never having needed one. The Better Business Bureau declines to rate the business at all, saying it lacks sufficient information. Its file there opened in 2018, which is a filing date and not a measure of how long the company has traded. For a small exterior repaint from a one- or two-person crew in the Greenfield area, ask for recent addresses you can drive past, and ask him to show you his current registration number so you can check it yourself with Consumer Affairs before any deposit changes hands.

He spent two days scraping and cleaning up the exterior. He then power washed it and put two coats of paint on the house. The house looks brand new now. He is very meticulous and careful. He is very professional and prompt. If he is in the middle of something, he will stay until he is finished. He is very good and very thorough. He tells you exactly what he will be doing and when and consults with us during the whole process. Project cost: $6,000.
