Barrett Custom Cabinetry is a one-person cabinet shop on Park Street in Mattapoisett, with James Barrett as its owner and the person a customer deals with. The work it advertises is design, fabrication and installation: kitchen and bath cabinetry first, then entertainment centers, bookcases and specialty furniture, plus countertops in laminate, solid surface, granite and quartz. Its Houzz portfolio runs 22 project photos, 17 of them kitchens, which is a fair map of where the shop spends its time. The company self-reports more than 28 years serving Massachusetts and nearby Rhode Island, and its BBB listing puts the start date at 1994 with a single employee. On Google it carries a 4-star average across 4 ratings. One customer's written account is harsh. In a January 2023 Google review, a homeowner rated the shop 1 star and described an island surface that was bubbling and never came back to be fixed, and a drawer that broke apart when a plate was dropped on it; the same reviewer objected that the cabinets were laminate rather than real wood. Laminate is in fact one of the countertop materials the Houzz profile lists, so pin down the exact material and the edge detail in writing before anything is cut. The other thing to raise on the first call: the Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration held by the company, #102042, is expired on the state registry as of September 2026. Ask about it, ask to see current insurance, and for a kitchen you will live with for twenty years, ask to see a recent installed job and how the shop handles a callback after the cabinets are in.
