One reviewer drew the line for you. Writing in May 2020 after a bad experience with interior work, she still said this: "I would only trust this company with exterior work." Everything else on Bento Construction's record points the same way. Outside, the accounts are specific and consistent. A 2017 client watched her leaning retaining wall collapse the same evening the owners came to look at it; they returned the next day with a crew, and six days later the wall was back up with a new drainage system and the shrubs replanted. Another 2017 homeowner said their estimate came in under three or four competing bids and the work finished inside the promised window. A 2018 client replacing a rotted railroad-tie wall described the old wall being removed surgically, plants left unharmed and the site swept clean each day. In September 2020 a Google reviewer put it plainly: every time Clayson said he would show up, he showed up. Inside is the exception, and it is a serious one. That same May 2020 review lists uneven walls, unlevel tubs, a pipe leak, loose flooring, electrical work not to code and shoddy masonry, plus pressure for payment on work she says was incomplete, and an owner who dismissed her complaints. The company is family-owned and says it has spent nearly ten years on patios, driveways, walkways and retaining walls. Houzz lists it as an ICPI certified paver installer and an NCMA certified retaining wall installer, and shows licence number CS107214 — a directory record, not a registry confirmation, so check that number with the state yourself. Ratings sit at 4.2 across 20 Google ratings and 4.3 across six on Houzz, but nothing has been written since September 2020. Hire them for stone, pavers and walls; if the job crosses the threshold into the house, get a different quote and compare.
Clayson and his team at Bento do a really good job. We had them build a walkway and patio at our home. Every time he said he was going to show up, he showed up — which is not true of other contractors! He helped with making design recommendations. He got us several variations of a quote, based on how much we wanted to spend right now. It was easy for us to choose some special materials (rather than the stock pavers they use), which he ordered for us. They showed up to start the job exactly when they said they were going to, and there were no days when they were supposed to be on the job and weren't. They cleaned up the job site when they were done.
I made the big mistake of giving Bento interior work on my house. at first I liked them, but then they caused a major accident with a pipe leak. I forgave them and we continued, only to discover significant problems with shoddy carpentry, unlevel tubs, things not done to code. Clayson was constantly hounding me for payments on incomplete work. I would only trust this company with exterior work, even then you must check everything!!! I've worked with Fernando and Rafael in the past on exterior jobs and patios and they were very easy to work with and professional. This time I hired Clayson for interior work and it was a disaster. It cost me a significant amount of time, money, and labor to fix the problems they left me with with zero apology. Another incident we had was a loose toilet they installed, when I tried to contact the owner to work out a solution, he said "I'm not happy with you and your small complaints". This company lacks the integrity and honesty you'd expect when you're trusting a contractor with your house. What a shame! ***Problems included uneven walls, unlevel tubs, leaky pipes and drains, unsecure toilets, very bad carpentry, loose flooring, code non-compliant electrical work, and shoddy masonry...***
We sought quotes from several masonry contractors and landscapers to install a new paver deck around our pool (and also a new paver pool coping). Bento came out on top for us because they were able to show examples of their previous work, and were very thorough in explaining the work involved. They did a high-quality job, paying attention to all the little details that really make a HUGE difference. They were also very professional, timely, and easy to work with.
The job: replace old rotten railroad-tie retaining wall with concrete blocks -- match existing adjacent block wall as well as possible. Results: couldn't have been better. Not a perfect match, but close enough to fool anyone unless they examine it carefully. Work was done quickly and neatly, by hand. The old wall and earth behind it were removed surgically. Nearby plants were respected and unharmed. Each day the area was swept clean. The excavated space was filled and patted down, looking like nothing had happened. It's hard to overstate how professionally this job was done. Work began when promised and was completed quickly. And all for a reasonable price. I don't normally write reviews, but I almost feel it a duty to recommend this company.
Great company and better people. Very professional, courteous and most if all, extremely competent. They did a very large project for me (large scale retaining walls, patio, flower beds, outdoor kitchen and fire pit) and it all came out great. I have had them back every summer since for add on projects and don't even consider going to bid as I know what I get with Bento (great quality workmanship for a very reasonable price - an excellent value). Unequivocally recommend Fernando, Rafael and the rest of the team.
