Burke & Crew Paintwrights has built a deep track record in Gloucester: 38 reviews across Google and Thumbtack, nearly all five stars, running from 2018 through this year. John Burke, who reviewers describe as hands-on, meets customers for estimates, checks in during the job, and stays reachable with questions. The through-line across years of reviews is care in the prep work, not just the paint: a 2019 Thumbtack review describes the crew fixing imperfections before painting rather than over them, and in a 2024 review, a customer recalled Burke & Crew replacing rotted wood and an entire roof while restoring a storage shed. Recent work follows the same pattern — a June 2026 review describes a multi-room redecorating job where the crew arrived exactly on schedule and kept communication organized throughout. In reviews dated between 2018 and 2023, customers single out specific crew members by name — Enos, Pablo, Guillerme — for detail-oriented work on cabinets, teak and cedar refinishing, and a difficult 25-foot-ceiling room. The company also does carpentry alongside painting: reviews from 2022 mention built-in closets and repairs to clapboards and water damage. One March 2026 review — the only mixed note among those quoted — flagged a discrepancy in billed hours, though the reviewer believed it was an honest mistake and said so. Before calling, it's worth knowing that the Better Business Bureau lists Burke & Crew as not accredited with an F grade, citing a missing required competency license — that conflicts with Massachusetts' own registry, which currently shows the company's home improvement contractor license active and verified. Thumbtack separately lists the company as background-checked with 18 years in business. For a painting job — especially one that needs real prep work, an awkward space, or carpentry handled alongside the paint — this is a crew with a long, largely positive record and one licensing question worth asking about directly.
“We hired Burke and Crew Paintwrights from Gloucester. Responsive, punctual and thorough.”
We hired Burke & Crew Paintwrights INC for a redecorating job across multiple rooms, and the experience was excellent from start to finish. They arrived exactly when they said they would and maintained a very organized and respectful approach throughout the work. Communication was easy and straightforward. The quality of workmanship is outstandin clean lines, smooth finishes and real care taken with every detail. They didn’t rush anything and clearly take pride in delivering a professional result. Everything was left clean.
The painter worked quickly and quietly and did a ver nice job. The cost was very fair.
The crew did a wonderful job with removal of wallpaper & interior painting. They worked fast yet efficiently, were very quiet, kind & respectful. There was a discrepancy on the billed hours. I do believe it was an honest mistake but I also want to make sure it is noted in case anyone else runs into that issue.
This is the 2nd time we’ve used Burke and Crew and they’re great. We have had 2 projects with a high degree of difficulty and they handled everything beautifully. Enos was a great lead painter, they are so thorough and detail oriented. The job site was very clean. The job came in slightly underbudget. We’re very pleased.
We had Burke & Crew paint the entire inside of our home as well as deal with some carpentry issues. We were extremely happy with the quality of their work as well as their price. We will use them again next spring for some exterior work.
