Burke & Crew Paintwrights, INC

Burke & Crew Paintwrights is a Gloucester house-painting company built around one man's reputation: John Burke, whose crews reviewers describe as showing up when they say they will and doing careful prep work before a drop of paint goes down. The company holds a Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration verified active by the state registry, and its Thumbtack profile lists 18 years in business. The volume here is unusual for a painting outfit: 38 reviews spanning 2018 through 2026, nearly all five stars, describing everything from a full two-story Colonial exterior to a single tricky room with 25-foot ceilings that had never been painted. Recurring names come up again and again — John himself, along with crew leads Enos and Pablo — and the same specifics keep repeating: careful cleanup every day, transparent pricing that came in under budget or under competing bids, and repair work folded into the job, like cracks and surface issues fixed before painting. One reviewer, restoring a badly deteriorated storage shed, described the crew replacing the entire roof and rotted wood before painting, on time and within the stated budget. Burke & Crew has also been a repeat painting and wall-repair vendor for a local Servpro franchise for several years, and a 2026 North Shore Reddit thread recommended the company as responsive, punctual, and thorough. The written record isn't spotless. A 2026 review that otherwise praised a wallpaper-removal and interior-painting job flagged a discrepancy in the billed hours, which the reviewer believed was an honest mistake. And the Better Business Bureau gives the company an F rating, citing a failure to hold a required competency license — a claim at odds with the active home improvement contractor registration the state registry confirms for this business. Beyond painting, reviews describe the crew handling adjacent carpentry work: building interior closets, repairing storage structures, and doing prep repairs ahead of a paint job, plus power washing decks, siding, and outdoor furniture. For interior or exterior painting in the Gloucester and North Shore area, especially a job that also needs some wood repair or prep work handled by the same crew, this is a well-documented choice with an unusually long, consistent track record — worth squaring the BBB licensing citation against the state's own active registration before booking.
