Ten of the twenty written reviews on file name Rob Calnan himself, and a May 2022 customer put it plainly: the owner is on site every day. Calnan's Energy Systems works out of Waltham on the weatherization end of home improvement — insulation, air sealing, replacement windows and doors. The company says it has been helping local homeowners since 1980, that it is family-owned, and that the owner supervises each project. The insulation work is where the detail sits. A February 2023 reviewer spelled out what they got — R60 cellulose in the attic, R60 foam board on the verticals — and said the house was much more comfortable afterward. A September 2021 customer had every window in the house replaced and attic insulation added, and reported energy bills cut in half. In December 2025, a homeowner described an insulation job on a 70-year-old house that had Rob coordinating with roofers, an HVAC team and cleaners. How the jobs run comes up as often as the work itself. In an October 2021 review, the crew hit significant unforeseen problems and stuck to their estimate anyway. A homeowner writing in April 2023 had two-thirds of their windows replaced, plus doors, trim and siding, and said the work is tidy enough that it is nearly impossible to tell something was replaced. The Massachusetts state registry records home improvement contractor registration #108453 to the company, the BBB grades the business A+, and BuildZoom counts 116 permitted projects. Price is the thing to raise early. A December 2021 reviewer thought the quote was a little on the high side; a June 2022 customer chose Calnan over a slightly lower estimate, citing his promptness and knowledge. One Google reviewer in August 2022 left a single star reading simply "No Response." And a 2017 reviewer flagged something worth checking for yourself — that Calnan was not part of the Mass Save program, which partly subsidizes this kind of project. For an older house that leaks heat — a cold attic, drafty windows, an uninsulated rim joist — this is the kind of outfit that will walk the house with you first and put the owner on the job. Get the estimate in writing and ask what happens to it if the walls turn up surprises, and confirm whether Mass Save incentives apply to your project before you sign.
