Capital Building & Design Inc. works out of 585 Milford Rd in Swansea and describes itself as a general contractor and design-build firm serving southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with design, architecture and project-management staff in house. Ron Eaton is president, and the team page also lists Cheryl, David and Doreen Eaton. The Better Business Bureau records the business as started in 1999 and incorporated in Massachusetts in 2001, with 30 employees, and grades it A+ — while stating on the same page that it is not BBB accredited. What the company gets hired for is whole-house work rather than single trades. A homeowner writing in April 2025 described a total rehab of a house in Swansea that went from design through a difficult permitting process to finish in six months; another the same month described a home addition run from initial consultation and budgeting through municipal approvals, naming the carpenters, excavator, electrician, plumber and flooring crew who worked on it. A Reddit commenter in December 2024 said the company added two dormers to their second floor to split one long room into two bedrooms, about seven years before writing. The older written record on Houzz points the same way: a full renovation of an 1865 house in Cambridge with custom cabinetry and a retrofitted AC system (December 2015), a kitchen-and-mudroom addition plus a master bed and bath for a repeat customer (June 2014), and a flood-damaged basement rebuilt with a new roof, exterior paint, rewiring and a deck added along the way (January 2014). Those accounts are a decade old and are history, not current practice. The platforms disagree, and the disagreement is worth knowing about. Google publishes 4.2 stars from 15 ratings; Houzz publishes 5.0 from four reviews, all written between 2013 and 2015; BuildZoom publishes 5.0 from a single 2021 review. The two one-star reviews sit on Google. One, from January 2022, describes a homeowner who had Ron out to assess a project, was told to expect an estimate in about two weeks, never received it, and made roughly seven calls over the following months without an answer. The other, from December 2024, is about the driving of a company vehicle on the way to Newport rather than about any job. Before signing, the estimate stage is the thing to pin down: get the written quote with a date attached rather than a verbal timeline. It is also worth asking directly about the safety record — an OSHA-record aggregator reports an inspection of a company of this name that produced three citations and $3,456.60 in proposed penalties, filed against a Barrington, Rhode Island jobsite address rather than the Swansea office, so confirm with the company which inspection that was. BuildZoom shows an active Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor registration for the firm; verify it yourself at the state's Office of Consumer Affairs before any deposit.
“I had good experience with CBD... That's capital building and design out of Swansea. (http://capitalbuildinganddesign.com/) They added two dormers on the second floor to make one long room into two bedrooms. They did the work for my house about 7 years ago.”
“CAPITAL BUILDING & DESIGN, INC. — a residential remodelers facility located at 28 OAK GROVE AVENUE, BARRINGTON, RI 02806 — was the subject of a formal OSHA inspection that resulted in 3 citation(s) and cumulative proposed penalties of $3,456.60.”
I routinely recommend Capital Building and Design to friends and family. Our entire experience with the family-owned company was amazing, from initial consultations and budgeting to design and municipal approvals, and (of course) the quality of work was amazing across the board. The open communication with the entire team throughout the process of building our home addition ensured it was completed on time and on budget! Every carpenter, excavator, electrician, plumber, flooring expert...every single member of the CBD team that worked on our project treated us like this was their own home project, and that's something you can't replace. 10/10 recommend CBD for your home construction and renovation projects!
We had the great fortune to have found Capital Building and Design for a total rehab of our house in Swansea. From design to finish they were and are a terrific family run business. They navigated through a very difficult permitting process seamlessly and delivered on every single piece of the refurb. We went from the ugliest house to the most beautiful in (6) months. In our initials discussions I was told " we can make this your dream home" it is and they did. The management is top notch, communicating and making field changes and suggestions to bring the project in on time. The craftsmen working in the field are very talented and a solid team of all manner of trades. Excellent work. The job site was clean. There were no change orders that were not discussed and figured out ahead of time. The most honest and genuine people I've had the pleasure of working with in 35 years.
If you want great carpentry and construction work, and you’re looking for a company who does what they say without cutting corners, you won’t be disappointed. Honest people who are going to do the right thing. If you’re looking for quality look no further. You may find cheaper but remember… “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low prices is forgotten “ Capital is the right choice.
Speedy and tailgating all the way to Newport at 6AM . Very professional. Enjoy your review bud!
After having the owner, Ron, come out to assess our project needs, where at the end, he said, we could expect an estimate in about 2 weeks-- we never heard back. Giving them some breathing room knowing that service professionals of all types are very busy since covid-19 struck in early 2020, we waited approximately 2 months to reach out to find out what and where the estimate is. Giving that they were recommended by friends of ours we did not seek out another estimate (mistake on our part). My wife and I attempted to call about 7 times in the course of another couple of months which put us 4 months behind and got no response back. If this is the way they treat potential customers I can't imagine what it would be like trying to get them to be responsive to concerns or finishing jobs once there started; most of us probably heard of horror shows of jobs started and taking months to finish because the company ultimately attempts to dangle several jobs at the same time. I believe that maybe we were spared that outcome--that "if its meant to be..." It apparently wasn't. Beware!!!
