Charles River Wine Cellars doesn't do driveways or kitchens — the company says that since founding in 1999, Ed Loughran's Walpole shop has done one thing: design and build custom wine cellars, wine walls, and bar/lounge rooms for Massachusetts homeowners with a collection to house, occasionally traveling further for the right project. Loughran still runs it himself, per the site. That claim holds up over more than a decade of reviews. A 2017 Houzz reviewer who was expanding an existing cellar from 2,000 to 5,000 bottles said Charles River beat two competing bids on design options, responsiveness, cost, and service, and called the finished space "perfect" eight months later. Another 2017 review singles out specific details — French limestone corners, solid mahogany ceilings — and notes that when a Baldwin locking mechanism failed three years after installation, Loughran replaced it without argument. Ten Houzz reviews from 2014 through 2017 average five stars, and outside recognition followed too: a 2024 Gold PRISM award from the Boston Design Guide and five Houzz Awards overall. That history is dated, though — nothing on Houzz is newer than 2017 — and the one review on the company's Google listing tells a different story: a May 2026 visitor called the service unresponsive and "extremely expensive." It's a single account against a decade of praise, but it's also the only recent word on file, so it's worth asking about current pricing and communication expectations before signing anything. Charles River holds an active Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration and carries an A+ Better Business Bureau grade, though it isn't BBB-accredited. (The company's own history says it was founded in 1999; BBB's file puts its start closer to 2009 — worth a quick question if exact tenure matters to you.) For a homeowner planning a genuinely custom cellar, wine wall, or home bar and willing to pay for bespoke work, the historic record is strong — just confirm the current quote and communication style match what you're expecting before signing on.

terrible service. extremely expensive and not responsive.
Ed and his team installed a great custom wine cellar in a difficult location in our basement. The installation was held up several times for other trades to do things (install floor, stucco walls), but the result at the end was great. We now have a great wine cellar/tasting area that is unique.
Great company to work with. Quality products. Have used CRWC on multiple projects and would not hesitate to work with them again.
When I decided to expand my existing cellar from 2000 bottle capacity to 5000 bottles, I went through a pretty complete review of firms who do business on the north shore of Boston, getting bids from three. Ed and the team at Charles River Design Build came out on top in terms of design options, responsiveness, cost and service. They finished the job on time and on budget and everything has been perfect since completion 8 months ago. I am very satisfied with their work and enjoy my cellar experience pretty much every day.
Ed and the team at Charles River Wine Cellars are the absolute best. From design to install and service they provide the highest level of service and quality. Ed coordinated with our builder seamlessly and we could not be happier with the results.
