A backyard one homeowner called "a graveyard of buried hopes" — seven years of mulch and a few plants that wouldn't take in the shade — is the kind of job Chestnut Grove Design Group gets called for. That June 2026 review is one of seventeen written accounts, and the shape of the work repeats across them: a slope too steep to walk up, a deck that had aged out, a new house in the Boston area still waiting on a landscape. The company says it is a husband-and-wife firm — Ryan Wikman on landscape, Christina Wikman on interiors — formed when the two merged their separate design businesses, and both its own site and its Houzz profile describe it as family-owned. Its studio is at 48 Mount Vernon Street in Winchester, and the work it advertises is interior design paired with landscape design for new construction and renovation projects around New England. Winchester News reported an April 2026 grand opening for the Winchester space. Google carries 4.9 stars from 16 ratings, Houzz 5.0 from three, and the written accounts run from 2018 to 2026 with nothing negative among them. What people describe is design and management more than a crew with shovels: a few plans drafted to choose from, options walked through for materials and contractors, then the build. In an October 2025 review a homeowner said the plan was executed on time and within budget, with new front-yard plantings; two September 2025 reviewers described a deck rebuilt much larger and a backyard basketball court. A December 2023 account walks through a full rework — stone walls, perennial gardens, a new pool, and beehives added along the way. Christina's half of the business surfaces less often. Those accounts date to 2023 and 2024 — a living room and a daughter's room reworked into rooms the family then used more, and a 2024 couple who recommended both Wikmans after their dream home. A November 2018 Houzz reviewer, who found the firm through her real estate agent, had a two-tiered garden with a slope too steep to reach the upper level; another that December had already hired them twice, first for interiors, then for landscape. Two things are worth pinning down. The volume here is modest — sixteen Google ratings and three on Houzz — so this is a consistent record rather than a deep one. And the Houzz profile still places the business in Woburn while the company's own site gives Winchester, so confirm which location is current before you call. For a difficult yard — shade, a slope, a blank lot behind a new house — and a homeowner willing to work through a staged design process rather than book a one-visit install, this is a reasonable call, more so if the interior is in play too.
“Chestnut Grove Design Group, a full-service interior design and landscape architecture studio specializing in traditional and historic homes, proudly celebrated its grand opening on April 17”
It was an absolute joy working with Ryan Wikman of Chestnut Grove Design on our backyard landscaping. We have lived in our home for seven years and our backyard has been a graveyard of buried hopes. Nothing seemed to thrive in the shade so we had only mulch and a few plants to look at. Our backyard is now an oasis! Ryan unlocked potential in the shade I didn't know could exist. Year-round color, a huge variety of colors and variegations and various height all add to the visual feast! From our first introduction, I was drawn to Ryan's warmth. He cares deeply about his clients and tailors every project to their unique needs. He not only has a talent for choosing plants, he knows how to choose people when it comes to subcontracting work. The mason, landscape, and irrigation crews were meticulous and great to work with. Of course, Ryan was on site every day hand placing over 300 potted plants, shrubs and a tree for us. Our project even finished a day ahead of schedule! Ryan is an artist in every sense of the word. We highly recommend him for your landscaping/hardscaping project!
Ryan has been very considerate and thoughtful through out the design, installation, and management. We’re very happy and excited to see that even our small yard can be turned into a much better, colorful, and pleasing garden! We look forward to seeing all the blossom, and definitely would recommend Chestnut Grove and work with them in the future👍
From start to finish Ryan and his crew were truly professional. Ryan drafted up a few plans for us to consider and then executed the plan on time and within budget. The new front yard plantings look terrific.
When you work with Chestnut Grove Design, you get the real deal. From design and planning to project management and execution, they deliver exactly what you’ve envisioned and, in our case, even improved on it. Ryan is responsive, listens carefully, and brings creative ideas that elevate the project. His team leveled our sloped yard, extended our outdoor living space by cutting into a hillside, built a beautiful patio, and rebuilt an aging retaining wall. They even installed large cisterns to handle lawn drainage issues, then wrapped it all up with thoughtful plantings, fencing around the property, and a host of finishing touches. It’s hard to think of anything they couldn’t tackle. Highly recommended.
Ryan did a fantastic job building our basketball court and deck! He is a wonderful designer, manager and very professional, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Highly recommend!
