Chilin's Painting & Remodeling

Too long; didn’t read: Kevin, who leads Chilen’s Painting and Remodeling is completely unprofessional. If you dare to ask any questions, you will be met with hostility and threats to cancel your project. Scheduling for us was a nightmare, and his attempts to get payments that do not align with Massachusetts state law will stop at nothing, up to and including calling the police and wasting their time. Last summer, we hired Kevin to scrape/sand, paint our house, replace 4 windows with new, and replace window trim on 5 windows. Our initial consultation with him was great, he was friendly and seemed to know what he was talking about. From the start of the project in June, things took a steep decline. When the team was getting ready to prime the house, I asked why they weren’t washing down the house first. Kevin informed me that they could prime and then wash the house. We had to insist, to his frustration, that they at least rinse the sanding dust off the house before they primed it. The paint job was unprofessional to say the least. Paint spray went all over our foundation, and across our new trim. When asked about this, Kevin said that overspray is expected in any job and we could ask any professional. I work in quality and understand what overspray is. 1 foot of paint spray over our foundation is not what I’d qualify as ‘overspray’. Additionally, spraying completely across several pieces of trim is not ‘over spray’ just because the sprayer went over. He had verbally said that they would ensure that the windows were properly protected, which was done on a couple windows, but the majority of them were not and received a blue over white treatment that was ridiculous. My main complaint with him, sloppy workmanship aside, was the incredibly unprofessional manner in which he spoke to us, and the insane scheduling issues. We had to constantly follow up on when they would be doing work on our house. The project was supposed to take a week tops, and it ended up taking about 4 months before they were finally completed. When he showed up to “complete” the job, he demanded his final payment. When that was refused because the job was not done, he got furious. I was on the phone with him and the other homeowners while he ranted at us, yelled over any questions or comments we were trying to interject, and even said something right along the lines of “don’t you dare try to come between me and my money!” and threatened to call the state board. We encouraged him to do so as we knew that what he was demanding did not align with MA state contractor laws. Based on his behavior all summer and the inability to meet his own schedule we assumed that if he got final payment, we would never see him again. Instead of calling the state board as he threatened, he called the police. The police showed up and asked what was going on. He told them that we were withholding payment even though the contract was complete, which was not true. We told the officers that we were withholding payment due to the scope of the work not being finished. We have the police report for this interaction. I cannot stress enough that I would NEVER hire Chilin’s again. I would never recommend him to anyone, his attitude alone was wildly unprofessional. His team’s behavior was courteous, and the man who was introduced to us as his father did incredibly precise work. Kevin, however, made this entire summer into fall project absolute hell. You can see based on my profile that leaving negative reviews is not something I prefer to do, but when it comes to this experience, I felt I absolutely had to.

I hired Kevin to complete interior painting and refinish flooring in a property I had just purchased. Initial interactions were positive, but the experience quickly declined. The quality of workmanship on the flooring was below expectations, with noticeable issues in finish and attention to detail. Communication throughout the project was inconsistent, and I often had to follow up repeatedly just to get basic updates. While he was finishing the painting job, I also contracted him to build a closet — which, in hindsight, was a poor decision on my part. This is where the situation became particularly frustrating. Midway through the closet project, he demanded additional payment beyond the agreed contract amount and implied that he would stop work if I did not agree to increase the price. The closet project extended over eight months and still remains unfinished. I ultimately had to terminate the agreement. During that time, I had to consistently call and message him to ask when he planned to return and complete the work. There was little to no proactive communication, and timelines were repeatedly pushed without clear accountability. The final straw was when he stated that since the shelves were already installed, completing the closet doors was not a priority because the shelves were “good enough” to store clothes. This completely disregarded the agreed scope of work. A closet is not considered complete without doors, and suggesting that unfinished work was acceptable because it was “functional enough” demonstrated a lack of commitment to delivering a finished product. Overall, my experience involved poor time management, mid-project pricing pressure, lack of accountability, and ultimately unfinished work. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend his services.
