Staircase Project – Project Background: I live out of state, but purchased a century-old home in Burlington because I love the community. The house came with a serious issue: a deteriorating covered exterior staircase leading to an upstairs apartment with unresolved city and fire marshal violations that I agreed to fix after closing. We’ve renovated homes before — but never in Vermont — and this project quickly proved far more complex than expected. I contacted countless contractors and gave each multiple opportunities to bid or return calls before moving on. As an out-of-state homeowner, this project was especially challenging. Then I met Ion, and he literally saved me! First Impressions & Professionalism: From our first interaction, Ion stood out. He showed up on time for the estimate — and he was the only contractor who printed and reviewed the reports and notes I had emailed in advance (home inspection, fire marshal reports, city documentation). He came prepared, and he took the project seriously. Most importantly, he assessed the structure thoroughly. The staircase wasn’t just worn — it was dangerous and worse than I thought. The footings were compromised, support beams were rotten, and the entire structure risked collapsing if multiple people walked on it. Project Plan & Execution: The rebuild required careful demolition, structural support of the existing roof, and completely rebuilding the basement entry — all while meeting city requirements. Ion proposed submitting proper plans through his designer to ensure the rebuild met code and aligned with my budget. Ion & his team literally handled everything for me!! Communication was clear. Pricing was fair and competitive. They worked insanely fast without compromising quality — racing the weather — and they dedicated all of their energy to this project to make me feel like my house was their number one priority. They are the hardest working team you will meet! I am picky, but Ion earned my full trust. He has an exceptional eye for detail, and several aesthetic decisions he suggested look even better than I could have imagined with my budget!! Project Outcome: Not only were all prior violations resolved, but the finished staircase is stunning! Neighbors have stopped to compliment the craftsmanship. When people walk by, they don’t look ahead where they’re walking, but rather, they turn their gaze to stare at the stairs as they walk past with a big smile. Ion’s work enhances the home and the neighborhood, and I’m incredibly honored to have found such a talented contractor to take on this project! Final Thoughts: Ion isn’t just skilled — he’s a principled perfectionist! He’s honest, incredibly hardworking, dedicated, and genuinely passionate about his work. He really is a great guy. This home has stood for nearly 100 years. The design process and construction phase were perfectly executed. Daily cleanup of the worksite was very much appreciated. And the attention to detail was exceptional.

Ion’s crew did a great job replacing some old rotten windows. 6 windows ripped out and replaced in a single day, including interior and exterior trimwork. Another day for a small team to caulk + paint. We’re planning to have them back next year to replace some more windows, a sliding glass door, and to redo the siding. If we ever build new, we’re calling this crew.
