The two people who have written about CS Bailey Landscape agree on one thing: the stonework is good. A construction firm that had worked with them on several projects called Chris and his team one of the best landscape construction outfits around back in July 2018, and even the homeowner who left a one-star review in April 2023 opened by saying they did an excellent job on her hardscape. Where that 2023 review turns is the planting. She wrote that numerous trees went in incorrectly and almost all of them died, that another company later found a wire cage still on a root ball, that the trees had been set too deeply — and that when she asked about replacements, she was asked to pay, then heard nothing back. That is a specific, unresolved account, and it lands on exactly the half of the business a garden company is hired for. The company itself is a husband-and-wife operation out of Harvard: Chris and Sue, both trained landscape architects, who say they have been at this more than 25 years and are still out in the field. The work spans design through construction — patios, walkways, stone walls — and ongoing organic garden care with electric equipment. The numbers are thin: three ratings in total, Houzz averaging 3.0 across two and a single five-star Google rating. If you are hiring them for terraces, walls and paving, the written record points the right way. If the job is trees and planting, ask directly about planting depth, root-cage removal and what their replacement warranty covers — and get the answer in writing.
They did an excellent job on our hardscape. Unfortunately the planted numerous trees incorrectly and almost all of them died. They asked me to pay for the replacement, and I did have another company replace one of the trees where they discovered the cage left on the root ball. They also told me all the trees were planted too deeply so not surprising they died. No response from the company when I contacted them.
We've worked with CS Bailey Landscaping on multiple projects because we believe that they one of the best landscape construction companies in the area. Chris and his team are extremely easy to work with and do a superior job of making what was dusty and brown become lush and green. Whether it's traditional landscaping of complex hardscapes, Chris has the ability to vision a space and deliver on that vision. I strongly recommend you consider Chris and CS Baily Landscape for your next project.
