D.A. Kinsella Company is a Billerica-based architecture and design-build firm founded in 1990 by Principal Architect David A. Kinsella, describing itself as family-run and serving Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and southern Maine with architectural design, construction management, design-build, and site work. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor license is verified active against the state registry, and it carries an A+ BBB rating. The written record is unusually deep, spanning 2010 through 2026 across nine platforms, and covers an unusually wide range of work under one roof: full architectural design packages for additions and ADUs, structural engineering repairs after building damage, kitchen and bathroom renovations, window replacement on a 60-year-old house, and site work like driveway repair, paver walkways, lawn replacement, and shed construction. Reviewers repeatedly describe the same pattern — David or his son Chris leading the design and project management, with named crew members carrying out the physical work — and credit the firm with handling complex, months-long projects patiently, including one addition project that took about a year of back-and-forth design changes. The record also includes real, credible friction. Two detailed 2018 reviews, on Houzz and Angi, both describe an addition project for a homeowner managing the work from thousands of miles away as an extremely difficult, drawn-out experience — one calling it "torture" and citing nearly a year to complete a 780-square-foot addition. A 2010 review said the design support was good but the finished work didn't meet local building code. Most recently, a 2026 Angi review described the experience as a "nightmare," alleging dishonesty and rudeness from a subcontractor on the job. That review sits alongside an otherwise overwhelmingly positive and detailed decade-plus track record. For a design-build project — an addition, ADU, or full renovation — the firm's breadth and licensing are well documented; the pattern in the negative reviews suggests it's worth being especially clear upfront about communication expectations and project timelines, particularly if you won't be on site to manage the work day to day.
“A follow-up 2019 code compliance assessment and repairs feasibility report by d.a. kinsella, recommended “the entire wood floor be removed and replaced with a concrete slab with a vapor barrier bearing in a compacted soil base.””
“I have had the pleasure of working with d.a.kinsella company on several residential projects in MA, and I like working with dak because they get things done.”

Great experience with Chris and his team. Very professional and hardworking. This construction company built an accessory Dwelling Unit for my Fiancée and I. Everything came out better than expected! We would highly recommend D.A.Kinsella Company to anyone why is looking to renovate or build their home.
This man should not even be in the category of "pro". He lied, his contractor was exceptionally rude and the experience each and every day with this company was a nightmare to work with. I notice on his website he often refutes all the negative comments. This must take him all day as there are many, many complaints I am reading. I'm sure he will have something to say about this comment as well. If you are looking for someone to contract and considering DAK, I would invite you to come see this place for yourself. He is a FRAUD.
We hired D.A. Kinsella for our garage addition project that was completed in February of this year (2025). Kinsella did all the architectural plans, engineering drawings, concept drawings, floor plan drawings, elevation plans, and construction. We had a great experience working with Chris and James Kinsella during the construction phase. As the Project Manager, Chris was a pleasure to communicate with and provided regular progress updates. Our addition was finished in the estimated timeline and on budget. I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship, professionalism, and attention to detail Kinsella put into the project to ensure it came out perfect. We get compliments from our neighbors all the time about how nice our addition came out. We look forward to working with Kinsella on future projects and highly recommend you give them a try!
Rafael and his team were very good to work with. They arrived just when they said they would, did high quality work and then did a careful cleanup when they were done. When there was some further touch up needed, they came right back and handled it right away. Recommend them highly, and would have no hesitation about working with them again.
It was great working with David and D.A. Kinsella team. We hired them to help design and do the architectural work for our second story addition. Dominic came out a couple times to complete measurements and he was always very precise and respectful. David’s communication was always great and scheduling was made easy. Definitely recommend them for any architectural work needed!
