Division One Masonry is a family-owned Seekonk company run by Steve Mello, with about six years in business. Its 31 reviews from 2022 through early 2026, across Google, Angi, and HomeAdvisor, are overwhelmingly five stars, and the range of work behind them is wide — retaining walls, patios, pool hardscapes, chimneys, and fireplaces. Retaining walls and hardscaping come up again and again. A 2026 review describes rebuilding and repositioning several dry-stack retaining walls on a 70-year-old hillside home in Cranston, Rhode Island, along with a new front walk. Other reviews describe a full backyard build-out with a large patio and outdoor bar that a customer said, nearly two years after completion, still looked as good as day one, and a paver pool patio project that one reviewer estimated at well over $100,000 in total work over time. The stonework itself draws specific praise, too: a 2022 review describes a custom fireplace built from a single reference photo that exceeded the customer's expectations, and another describes a fireplace surround incorporating stones salvaged from the customer's great-grandparents' home foundation. Multiple reviews also describe chimney repointing work. A consistent theme across the years is Steve himself — reviewers describe him as responsive, upfront about costs, and willing to walk customers through design decisions before work begins, with quoted prices and timelines that reviewers say held. For retaining walls, patios, pool hardscape, or chimney and fireplace work in the Seekonk area, this reads as a small, owner-led crew with an unusually deep and consistently positive multi-year history behind it.
Steve is great to work with. Good communication and excellent work repairing a retaining wall in my driveway that was struck by a vehicle. Highly recommend.
We purchased a 70 year old home in 2024. It’s built on a hill. Every bit of stone work from the dry stack retaining walls in back to the front walk were falling apart. The home is in Cranston RI. We hired Division One to rebuild the retaining walls, move them in some cases, build a granite patio, cover our kitchen entry stoop in blue stone, extend our front stoop, build a front walkway to the street, reset the cobblestones along the driveway and include drainage in all projects to address a persistent surface water problem. Steve Mello’s team is efficient, precise, and nothing short of a band of artisan craftsman and I don’t use that phrase lightly. They broke each stone by hand with a hammer carefully creating my retaining walls. I asked why there were no visible drains given that I was used to seeing ugly pvc pipes protruding from walls. Steve assured me that the drainage would happen through holes not visible but very much present and he was correct. The more than 120 feet of wall is just stunning. The pics don’t do it justice. There was an original flagstone staircase in the old wall that I wanted to save to avoid overspending. Steve’s team expertly integrated it such that you cannot tell it’s not part of the new project. Overall the walls portion of the project convinced us that the lead man on the job (Carlos) was a genius. Then they moved on to the granite patio and the front walk. Carlos was out sick and I was slightly worried. But I needn’t be. Each project was executed with so much care and consideration, frankly far beyond what I would have even hoped for. The walls, the stoops, the walks, all amazing. Every single one of these guys, Marco, Emiliano, and the others have trained for years and they each bring an incredible set of talents to the job. They can literally swap out with no discernible change in quality from working along side each other for many years. It’s just unheard of nowadays. If you are a total control freak you may need to let go a little. Rather than destroy everything there and build to order, these masons work with the terrain and the materials to create something magical. Their skills are more in alignment with the work you see done in Europe than what is commonly found in the U.S. They really do know best so my advice is to listen when they tell you something will look better than what you asked for. This is something I wish more craftsman would do. Steve’s team is beyond busy as a result of the quality they offer. So don’t be surprised if you have to wait. And if you want it done next year it’s not too early to get in line. There is definitely going to be a line. Steve does his best to make everyone happy but take my word for it. Weather and conditions mean these guys are often sidelined and schedules get pushed so start well before you want it done. As for price, given the hours put in it seemed more than fair. Up front it seems like a lot and then you watch these guys slave dawn to dusk for weeks and you see that you are in fact getting your moneys worth. My neighbor said it best when he said “If you ever decide to sell, this is what is going to sell this house.” Not cookie cutter Home Depot BS. Craftsmanship for the ages. Steve is coming back next spring to give me a new driveway and do some other stuff. I would not use anyone else.
We had been planning to redo our backyard for some time. We learned about Steve Mello from Division One Masonry through a family member who had work done by them. The work they did was beautiful. We asked Steve to come and look at our project. He visited a couple of times before starting and provided valuable input on our design. The team of Division One Masonry were professional and very hard-working. They created a two-tier wall with patios and walkways. The workmanship was outstanding. We are extremely happy with the results and would highly recommend Steve and Division One Masonry to others for their projects.
I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing Steve Mello and his team are!!! Steve is such a great guy very nice and always responds their work is TOP TIER they rebuilt my stone wall and it came out GORGEOUS I can’t recommend them enough!!! Thank you Steve!!!
We found out after years of burning that our chimney was falling down! My good friend Steven Mello from Division One Masonry took special care of us and truly treated us like family. Not only are his prices more than fair, his professionalism is second to none, and I am not trying to be cliche or overstating this. He and his crew worked tirelessly through holidays and freezing weather. First, to make sure our daughter could sleep in her bed safely during the Christmas season, and then to make sure the chimney was rebuilt in time for us to enjoy some winter fires and heat or home. If you are in need of PROFESSIONAL first class Mason work, including tile, landscaping, pools, patios, etc. Division One and Steve is the way to go!! Before and after photos attached
