DJK Contracting is an Arlington-based remodeling and general contracting business run by David Kaloustian, who says he has been in business since 1982. Its stated work spans kitchens, baths, additions, decks, windows, siding, flooring, roofing, electrical, plumbing, painting, masonry, and small repairs. Homeowners have hired DJK for substantial renovations and additions. In a 2016 review, one Newton homeowner described a new bathroom, cedar closet, master-bath renovation, replacement windows, heating and central air work, and paint and patching; they praised the crew’s cleanup, politeness, deadline effort, and design suggestions. Another 2020 reviewer said two additions were kept neat and finished ahead of schedule, and called the work first-rate. The written history is dated: all three quoted Houzz reviews are from 2016–2020, alongside a current Houzz rating of 3.7 from three ratings. There is also a materially negative account to discuss before booking. In a 2017 review, a homeowner said a condo renovation was left dirty and incomplete, with plaster across fixtures and floors, an unrepaired light, and delayed follow-up after promised work. That complaint sits alongside the positive accounts, so prospective customers should ask for a written scope, schedule, cleanup expectations, and a clear process for handling changes or unfinished items. DJK is a sensible candidate for homeowners seeking one contractor across carpentry, remodeling, and related electrical or plumbing coordination, especially where the project includes several trades. Confirm the current scope, timeline, responsible subcontractors, and license details before signing; the BBB listing is non-accredited despite its A+ grade, while Houzz lists license 1019280.
Dave did two additions for my wife and I, both while we lived in the home. He and his crew did a good job of keeping the work area neat throughout the project so we didn’t feel like we were living in a construction zone. My wife was pregnant during the first project and Dave went out of his way to finish ahead of time which was a good thing because our daughter came three weeks early. First rate work at a fair price. We highly recommend DJK Contracting!!!
Had very high hopes for this contractor but was ultimately very disappointed. He told us everything was done and we could move back into our condo but when we returned the place was a complete mess! There was painters paper cover our floor and our kitchen was still taped off. There was dust and dirt covering the walls floors and every surface in our condo. There was plaster splattered all over the floor but it was the worst in our bathroom. It was not only splattered all over our tile floor, toilet, sink, shower and floor, it was so thick i couldn’t clean it up. I had to use a razor to scrape it off each surface. It took us days to clean up the mess they made and then left. We informed Dave and he apologized but didn’t send someone to clean or fix the splattered plaster everywhere. We also had a dimmable light fixture that no longer works. It has been over a week and a half and still no electrician has come like Dave assured us would. The work they did was ok but if I spend $20 K I expect them to at least pretend to clean up!
I have worked with DJK Contracting on multiple projects at multiple homes. They did such great work I would not consider anyone else. Most recently, DJK completed the following work on my home in Newton: Installed high efficiency heating and central A/C system. Very difficult job in turn of the century brick house. Created a new bathroom in a space previously used as a closet. Created a large cedar closet using doors salvaged from elsewhere in the house. Renovated the master bathroom. Installed replacement windows throughout the house. Various paint and patch work as needed. The workers cleaned up after themselves every evening. They worked overtime to meet deadlines. Everyone was extremely polite. David, the head of DJK recommended several improvements to our plans that in some cases reduced costs and in others, just added value to the work that was being done (repositioning a door, salvaging existing materials, etc.) I recommend DJK highly for jobs large and small.
