A 2025 reviewer said Ricky Sprague, owner of Generations Custom Homes, built their 3-bedroom, 2-bath cottage in Bar Harbor and tracked the job in a detailed budget and progress spreadsheet he updated with each invoice. That 2025 customer also said Ricky had a window alignment issue fixed on his dime and arranged for quartz countertops that were not cut at 90 degrees to be recut and reinstalled. The company says it manages every phase of custom home building and renovation under one roof, and its website names a service area running from Mount Desert, Bar Harbor and Ellsworth to Bangor, Brewer and Hampden. A 2025 customer who had moved to Seattle said a previous carpenter "made a total hash out of the section he had torn up" on the decks of their island house. That 2025 customer said Ricky took the work on, the decks were rebuilt from the ground up within two months, and the work passed inspection. A 2026 Houzz reviewer said Generations put a new metal roof on the main part of the house in 2017, and that after a thunderstorm lifted the metal roofs, Ricky Sprague sent someone to repair both that roof and one he had not installed. A 2024 customer said Ricky built a modular home while the customer was away in Florida. A 2025 customer said Ricky completed a new deck and some landscaping while they were out of state, and a 2025 reviewer described a carport built onto the existing garage at their business. In a 2023 review, a property management company owner said Ricky's crew installed a large custom window at a high-end residential property, showing up the next day when the window arrived earlier than quoted. A 2023 customer said Ricky and his team replaced windows and siding on one of their Bar Harbor buildings and came in on schedule and on budget through Covid delays.
I had generations put a new metal roof on the main part of my house in 2017. The plan was to match the new roof to the existing metal roof on a newer addition. The quality work was done promptly and professionally. Years later my home was hit by a straight line thunderstorm that snapped utility poles and lifted the metal roofs causing leakage damage to my home. Ricky Sprague sent someone to repair the roof damage to both the new roof and the existing roof that he had not even installed. I highly recommend Generations not only for their great installation work but for their excellent post installation support.
We hired GCH to build our forever home, and we couldn't be happier with the outcome. From start to finish, everyone we worked with was kind, knowledgeable, and professional. They made the process smooth and manageable, and we always felt supported along the way. We're grateful for their work and would recommend them to anyone looking to build.
The owner and staff of GCH are professional, fair, honest and timely. They showed up on time and completed their scope of work faster than expected. We won't use anyone else for our construction needs! Thank you GCH!!
Generations Custom Homes came to my rescue at a very dark time. I moved from Mount Desert to Seattle in Jan 2025 to be closer to family, given fact that all my family was on the west coast and that I was alone (I am a widow) on the east coast. I needed to get my house on the island ready for sale and knew that the decks needed some major repairs. Based on the recommendations of a realtor, I hired a carpenter to renovate my decks (very large wrap around deck, small kitchen deck, large front deck) long distance. He, unfortunately, turned out to be unscrupulous, lied about the progress he was making, and made a total hash out of the section he had torn up and supposedly rebuilt. I rushed home from Seattle, fired him, and then made several calls to reputable companies and carpenters to see if anyone could take on the work (difficult, given that it was summer). Ricky Sprague, the owner, once he heard my tale of woe, was enormously kind and took the work on, despite being very busy. On inspection, we realized that the decks were in worse shape than I had thought and needed to be rebuilt from the ground up. Ricky was very fair and honest with estimates and worked with me to redesign the decks so as to keep costs down. He promised to get the work started in August so I could see part of the work before having to return to Seattle. He was extraordinary responsive to texts or emails (even on the weekends). He sent around a wonderful crew headed by a master carpenter who was extremely skilled. They did not waste time, showed up early in the morning and often worked until 5 or 6 pm, leaving the site tidy and clean. They worked fast and efficiently. Ricky was true to his word- he got all the decks completely rebuilt, despite discovering more rot in the posts and some other setbacks, within two months. The work passed inspection and he sent me some wonderful photos of the finished decks- they look beautiful! It was a pleasure to work with someone who cared deeply about the quality of the work done by his people and about his workers and who kept his promises to an elderly and very anxious widow. I will be forever grateful to Ricky and to Bo and Jameson, the crew who worked on the house. I cannot recommend Generations Custom Homes highly enough.
Wonderful company to work with. I just cannot say enough wonderful things about Ricky and his crew. Easy to work with, very talented and detailed and communicated with me frequently during the project!!! I would 100% recommend Generations to friends and family!!!
