Great Northern Builders is a remodeling company whose own site lists a service area from South Berwick, Eliot, York and Kittery over to Dover and Portsmouth. The company says it has been in business 24 years, and on its BBB profile it describes itself as passionate about renovating local historic homes in Southern Maine and the Seacoast area of New Hampshire. A recent customer who lives in Massachusetts said the company remodeled the kitchen in their Maine house, with daily updates and pictures and samples sent overnight, and turned a cramped 1980s space into an open room. A recent deck customer said the job covered demolishing an existing deck, building a larger Trex deck to carry a hot tub, adding electrical outlets and moving two shrubs; when the city caused a delay, project manager Olivia worked with the city and the crew, and the deck was built on time for an event. A recent customer said an unfinished room was completed, with a daily report and photos from the project manager. A 2025 customer said the company handled estimates, plans, designs and carpentry after an ice break devastated their basement, worked with their insurance company, and finished on time and on budget. A 2024 customer said the company completed a first-floor-living addition, with Scott managing the subcontractors; that 2024 customer also said the company is known to be on the expensive end. A 2023 customer said Great Northern Builders added a bathroom and replaced windows, a furnace, ductwork, electrical wiring, insulation, roof and siding on a 125-year-old house, shored up a foundation problem and replaced the old garage. A 2023 customer said the company did a full gut demolition and framing of a historic two-family and installed two balconies. A 2023 customer said founder Len Bogh helped plan two projects for them: a 900 sq ft addition remodeled into an aging-in-place first-floor apartment, and a restoration after a pipe burst damaged part of their first floor and basement.

Great Northern Builders is great and I highly recommend. Professional, experienced, and led by experts, it led to results in the desired timeline. Melanie Merz does a fantastic job working with clients and managing her teams to the right outcomes.
Working with Great Northern Builders on our kitchen remodel was an absolute pleasure. The team has outstanding expertise in all areas of a home project, from marketing to design, craftmanship, project management...beginning to end, the team was top notch. We live in Massachusetts and were remodeling our kitchen in our Maine house. We were nervous at first about not being nearby during the project, but the communication was excellent. We received daily updates and pictures, samples sent overnight to help us to make selections, and they responded to our questions in a very timely fashion. The process was very transparent, and they really listened to what we wanted the space to look like rather than pushing ideas on us. When we didn't know what we wanted their recommendations from their experience was super helpful. I don't have before and after pictures, but I hope they post some. They transformed a 1980's cramped space into an open beautiful magazine worthy room! We recommend this company highly and without reservation. Thank you, Great Northern Builders! Absolutely wonderful to work with! When we first thought about building a new deck we knew we needed a team that could deliver (of course), but what we really needed was an experienced team that could coordinate deliveries, manage the onsite crews, and facilitate the city inspections - all the things that we didn’t have time or patience for! We went with Great Northern Builders based on our first encounter with Melanie. She was informative, knowledgeable and personable. She laid out the process, timing and budget clearly and answered any questions we had. She aligned us with the design team who drew up exactly what we envisioned. From there she connected us with our project manager Olivia who is was a total Rock Star! Even the billing was painless (or as painless as it can be!). Our project consisted of demolition of an existing deck, building a new larger deck (trex) that could support additional weight for a hot tub, adding electrical outlets and moving two shrubs that would be displaced by the new deck. Everyone who worked at the house was professional, friendly and informative. We hit a snag with a delay due to the city. Olivia communicated with us every step of the way, worked with the city to meet all requirements AND worked with the crew to still get my deck built on time for a huge event we were hosting! I can’t say enough good things about our experience with Great Northern Builders.
I cannot say enough great things about working with Karen. She was professional, communicative, knowledgeable and brought so much incredible energy into our project. From the very start, it felt like we could really rely on her to help our vision come to life. We have had an incredible experience with Great Northern and Karen really set the company apart from the competition with her enthusiasm and passion. We could not be happier. I would recommend this company and Karen to anyone looking to upgrade their home. You would be lucky to work with this crew.
Karen and the entire team have been beyond amazing! Karen has made us feel heard and helped our vision come together. She has consistently showed up for us and made us feel welcomed and part of the Great Northern Builders Family! I would gladly work with her and the entire team any day of the week. I truly cannot say enough good things about her and the entire company! They are beyond wonderful.
