Gregory Lombardi Design is a Cambridge-based landscape architecture practice that has spent more than three decades getting written up in shelter magazines rather than chasing retail reviews — Boston Magazine, Cottages & Gardens, and half a dozen regional design outlets have profiled its work since at least 2015, consistently describing a narrative, site-specific approach: reading a property's history and natural materials before drawing a plan. The company, founded by Gregory Lombardi in 1991, now runs 14 employees across two Massachusetts locations and also does business as Parterre Gardening Service. That editorial reputation is echoed, though thinly, in the reviews actually on file. A 2013 endorsement from an interior design firm calls the work thoughtful and forward-thinking across several large-scale Greater Boston properties, and a 2018 homeowner review describes creative ideas that surpassed expectations on their finished landscape. The projects themselves, per press coverage, run large: a pool built into existing ledge, roof terraces, gates and fences, outdoor fireplaces, and hardscapes designed to work with a house's architecture rather than around it. One thing worth raising directly before signing: a 2017 Houzz review from a different client describes a project that ran behind schedule and over budget, ending in a dispute serious enough to involve lawyers and the threat of arbitration before it was settled by paying the outstanding bills. With only three reviews on file, that account carries real weight. BuildZoom also lists a Massachusetts landscape architect license under Gregory D. Lombardi's name, though BuildZoom itself flags it as unverified, and the one permit on file under that name is for an unrelated chimney repair rather than landscape work. For a large-scale, design-forward outdoor project, this is a firm with the press credentials and design range to match. Given the one serious dispute on record, get the schedule and budget terms specific in writing before signing.
“No detail is too small for landscape architect Gregory Lombardi, who draws on natural materials, history, and the site itself to tell the unique story of a place.”
“Landscape Architect Gregory Lombardi designed carefully thought-out hardscapes and plantings to create a relationship with nature directly outside the home’s doors and windows.”
“At the helm of this large-scale project stands landscape architect Troy Sober of Gregory Lombardi Design, who was tasked with harmonizing the client’s new residence with its natural surroundings during the project’s initial phase. Under the skillful execution of Landscape Creations, the design team’s vision came to life, resulting in an expansive masterpiece of outdoor entertainment zones, such as a swimming pool with an elegant cascading spa, a stone terrace adorned with a fire feature, an outdoor kitchen and dining space, a serene retractable screened-in porch, and a designated play lawn. “Gregory Lombardi Design is a 20-person, award-winning landscape architecture practice founded in 1992 with a simple mission: to craft magnificent outdoor spaces for highly discerning clients. Principal architect Gregory Lombardi discovered his love for the outdoors and design at a young age. Developing an art history background in college, Lombardi later participated in the Harvard Graduate School of Design Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning. “I found my voice in landscape architecture. It combined my Naturalist perspective about the outdoor world, and my Designer perspective about want”
“Landscape architect Gregory Lombardi of Gregory Lombardi Design in Massachusetts.”
Greg and his team were truly wonderful to work with. Their creative ideas for the landscape brought the whole project together and far surpassed our expectations. We have received so many compliments from our family and friends and are beyond thrilled with how gorgeous our property has become!
If I could, I would give this company zero stars. They were behind schedule, way overpriced, and unprofessional. We ended up with lawyers and potential arbitration but ultimately decided to just pay their bills so that we could warn others about them. I wish I had read this kind of review before I hired them.
I have had the pleasure of working with Greg Lombardi and his team on several large scale properties in the Greater Boston area. Greg's design is thoughtful, engaging and forward thinking, bringing tremendous value and curb appeal to properties old and new. The combination of Greg's creative talent, accessable and professional manner is sought after by client and professionals in the design community. Greg Lombardi Design is always on SLC Interiors, Inc. client referral list!
