Haffner's is a fuel company first — home and commercial heating oil, propane and kerosene delivery — with an HVAC arm handling maintenance, repair and installation for the houses it fuels. By its own account it has been in fuel since 1925, is family-owned a century on, and employs more than 1,200 people across a business that also runs gas stations, car washes and convenience stores. The service call that best explains what hiring them looks like happened in November 2024. A homeowner came back from a trip to a dead furnace on a cold day, reached a tech named Tommy who was on call, and got walked through a reset by phone. When it failed again, Tommy spent hours hunting down power-vent parts and finished the work outside in the dark while the customer held a light. The heat came back at midnight. Two 2023 reviews are quieter versions of the same thing — a tech named Jeff and his partner in and out without fuss, another call described as efficient and polite. The counterweight is administrative, not technical. In April 2024 a customer gave two stars over billing, describing a department that repeatedly blamed them for its own mistakes and made them prove it before agreeing to raise it with corporate. Neighbors point here on Reddit too. In an October 2024 Massachusetts thread about a $17,000 furnace-and-HVAC quote, a commenter said Haffner's has always been the cheapest when they needed them; a December 2024 Nashua thread asking for gas furnace inspection and maintenance drew the same name, with the caveat that the commenter wasn't sure whether you have to be a current delivery customer. Its Google page sits at 4.1 stars from 15 ratings, and the written record runs 2022 to 2024 rather than into this year. If you already take oil or propane from them, calling the same company for the burner is the natural move, and the after-hours response is the part customers actually write about. Ask first whether they will service a non-delivery customer, and keep an eye on the invoice.
“Haffners. Not sure if you need to be a current delivery customer or not.”
“We use Haffners always been the cheapest when we needed them”
We came home from a trip to find our furnace was out, and it was somewhat cold day. I called Haffner and was put in touch with Tommy who was on call. He walked me through a reset which seemed to work at first, but it failed again and I called Tommy back. He ended up having to drive and search for hours for the parts needed for our powervent and I assisted him (held a light) as he did the work in the cold dark outside. We came close to giving up but Tommy persisted and we finally have heat at midnight as I write this. Our sincere thanks to Tommy and Haffner.
Their billing department is terrible. Blames customer repeatedly for own mistakes then after customer has to jump through hoops to prove it to them they say oh okay, I’ll let corporate know. Awful.
Thanks for sending Jeff and his partner over to my house today…Smart, professional, and good humored. Did the job without any problems and efficiently. Appreciate this very much, thanks again
