Three plumbers came out to look at one job in 2016 and all three said they could not do it. Pete did — punctually, cleanly, and for what that customer called the right price. Abacus Plumbing Heating and Gas Fitting carries a 5.0 average on Google across 10 ratings, and its written accounts are dated: five of them, running from December 2016 to February 2021, every one naming the same man. What they describe is a tradesman who answers his own phone. A homeowner whose water heater broke in March 2017 called at 7am, got Pete on the line straight away and had a price for a replacement in that same call — the referral had come from a friend who said he would trust Pete with his kid. In early 2018 he was brought in to a boiler that had stopped, and the customer's note was that he explained what it needed in clear terms before getting them running again. Another customer, new to Arlington in 2018, had him install a gas stove. Since the newest of those accounts is from February 2021, take the specifics as history rather than today's practice. Before booking, confirm who would come out, that the shop still works the way those customers describe, and what the visit costs.

I totally agree with the other nine Google reviews I currently see, that are all 5.0. Each of the bullet points Google asks about, namely Professional, Good Quality, Good Value, Responsive, and Punctuality, merits a 5.0. At 2 pm I discovered my water heater was leaking water onto the floor and delivering cold water. Despite the cold weather that had other recommended plumbers stating they were booked until about five days later, Peter immediately answered (around 2:30 pm), mentioned that likely I would need to pay an emergency fee or wait a few days, but when I said I could just take cold showers for a few days and wouldn't need to treat it as an emergency, he decided that without any emergency fee, he could immediately get his helper and a 50 gallon tank together and show up in Newton, from Arlington even though that is somewhat beyond his usual range. He was here by 4 pm, his helper arived a few minutes later and the job was fully done by 7:30 pm. Everything about Peter's visit was thoroughly both courteous and professional, and timely as well, and his use of a fancy $2500 crimping tool demonstrated his commitment to modern technology despite his complete knowledge of older-house techniques like using molten lead on cast-iron drainpipes, or silver-soldering, or the proper ways to add new fittings to old steel gas lines, or to old copper tubing, as well as to install all devices called for by code such as a CO alarm (his one had smoke alarm as well, and is a "talking" model). And testing all connections, using soap films, matches to test proper draft, etc. Everything about his job demonstrated his mastery of how to do things right. He was unfailingly polite, expertly informed about hot water heaters of course, and diagnosed that the proper size would be 50 gallons rather than the 40 gallons that often led to running out of hot water for me. He asked me to send photos and based on that he immediately stated the price and said he could be right over. His price was properly in line with my 2012 bill (the prior 10 year heater didn't quite make it a full 10 years), but also included several major improvements he did compared to the prior job in 2012. He improved the exhaust venting to be a full 4 inches, using all new exhaust tubing and new cementing, done properly rather than the prior plumber who joined a 3 inch outlet to an existing 4 inch pipe, he added a very useful gas shutoff valve instead of keeping the prior 116 year old one in place, he was very informative about how to light the pilot and set the temperature. Even his helper was articulate and friendly. The resulting connections look very artistic and professional, and everything was fully cleaned up. In short, I highly recommend Peter for any plumbing job.
First off, wonderful job and wonderful guy!!! Here is why he is a wonderful guy...I am new to Arlington and needed a plumber to install a new gas stove. I looked online and saw that Pete / Abacus Plumbing had high ratings, so I called and scheduled an appointment. He had another request for the same time as mine and he left me a vm that he would have to cancel mine and would reschedule. Initially I didn't like being bumped, but called Pete back to reschedule. I couldn't accommodate his proposed time, and was going to be out of town, so Pete asked if I would be home in 20 minutes. I said yes, and he came over at 7:30pm to install my stove. No extra charges for after hours, extremely happy to help. He told me that the other guy was an elderly man in failing health whose boiler gave out and needed a replacement asap. How wonderful that Pete put me off to take care of someone who needed his services more! Pete is a good man, a fine plumber and I'm very glad I called him first!
Peter was called in to fix our non functional boiler in early January. I found him to be a professional and knowledgeable tradesperson. He explained what needed to be done in clear terms and proceeded to get us up and running. We had an excellent experience using Peter as our much needed plumbing service provider.
My water heater broke, and I was referred to Pete from a friend, who literally said “I would trust Pete with my kid”. I called Pete at 7AM and he immediately answered the phone and was very helpful, and even gave me a price for a new unit, given how old mine was and the likelihood that it needed to be replaced. He was at my house in less than one hour, at 8AM no less! He fully diagnosed my water heater when he got there, and explained to me what the problem was and what my options were. I moved forward with the new unit, which Pete had thought ahead to load into his truck and bring with him to my house. By 11AM Pete was done installing the new water heater, and I could not be happier! Not only did Pete do excellent work and leave a clean area afterwards, but he was also very reliable trustworthy and reasonably priced! Pete really saved the day, and I’m truly grateful! For anyone looking for an excellent plumber who understands that customer service is just as important as the work done, look no further than Abacus Plumbing!
We had a very tough job for a plumber. We got quotes from three other people and they actually told us they could not do it when they came to evaluate it. Pete was super professional and did an awesome job for the right price. He was very punctual, responsive and clean. I would not hesitate in calling him next time. I highly recommend him.
