In October 2023 the Massachusetts Attorney General's office announced citations against Idea Painting Company and its owner, Elias Delana Junior, totaling $511,045.50 in restitution and civil penalties for failing to keep or furnish accurate records and failing to pay employees sick time and overtime wages, as reported on mass.gov. Violation Tracker separately lists a $60,000 penalty dated July 17, 2024 for misclassifying workers as independent contractors. Idea Painting is a residential and commercial painting company, with Houzz and BBB profiles in Medfield. Its written reviews run from 2018 to 2023 and are mostly on Houzz, where it shows 4.5★ from 17 ratings. Earlier customers praised Elias and his crew: in March 2018 reviews, one described an entire house exterior painted on time at a fair price, another kitchen cabinets and walls finished within the estimated time frame, and a third a 7,000-square-foot commercial space completed in a few days. Later customers complained about cabinet work. In a November 2023 Houzz review, a customer said the original wood color bled through their painted kitchen cabinets after a few weeks because of faulty primer, the company was hard to reach to fix it, and painters' tape damaged the ceiling and walls, which the company refused to repair. A November 2020 reviewer said their cabinets stained in less than a month, the company would not stand by the work, and customer service turned rude once the project was paid in full. The BBB rates it B- for failing to respond to a complaint, and its page shows a review alleging that shingles were painted over instead of replaced as estimated.
