Every written review Ivory & Bone Interiors has collected runs five stars, and the ones that go into detail keep landing on the same thing: a room that ends up looking like the people who live in it. The Newburyport studio says Katie Goodrich founded it in 2013 and still leads it as founder and principal, and that it works Newburyport and Boston. What it sells is design rather than construction. The company describes itself as planning residential and commercial interiors — kitchens and baths, layouts, custom furniture, lighting and finish selection — and collaborating with general contractors rather than doing the building itself. Its Houzz listing runs the same way, from kitchen and bathroom design through custom cabinets, built-ins and vanities. On Google the average is five stars across 28 ratings, and the written accounts stretch back to 2021. A homeowner writing in July 2026 described a dining room, parlor and kitchen remodel with designer Ellis — a wallpaper mural, antique lighting, and an antique record table hunted down for a 175-year-old house. A 2025 reviewer described an outdated kitchen redesigned the previous fall, with the design, the coordination with their own general contractor, the installation and the follow-up all going smoothly. People name their designers — Katie, Ellis, Lauren — far more often than they name the firm. The work turns up outside the review pages too. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles credited the studio in September 2024 with a yacht-inspired primary-bath vanity in a historic Newburyport house, constructed by HDC Millwork; Northshore Magazine credited Goodrich in December 2024 with the Cuban-inspired interior of the Coach Club golf facility in Newburyport; and Good Housekeeping quoted her this spring on kitchen styling. Two things are worth raising on the first call. Because the studio designs rather than builds, the construction contract, the schedule and the workmanship warranty sit with whichever general contractor you hire — ask early how the two roles split and who purchases what. And a 2025 reviewer said outright that the published portfolio's neutral, mid-century palette made them doubt the fit before hiring; they went on to praise the Gothic, Baroque and Moroccan elements the studio delivered, so if your taste is loud, ask to see that work directly rather than judging from the website. This is the right call for a homeowner who wants a kitchen, bath or whole-house interior planned in detail and is already working with — or ready to hire — a builder. Before booking, confirm the scope of the design fee, which selections it covers, and how the studio hands off to your contractor.

We worked with Ellis from Ivory and Bone for our dining room, parlor, and kitchen remodel. She is talented, incredibly patient, and a great and swift problem solver. She deftly managed my love of color; pushed us to try new things with a wallpaper mural; hunted down the perfect antique pieces of furniture and lighting for our 175 year old home; created the perfect cozy parlor for us to enjoy in the evenings with our books, cocktails, and records; and found the perfect antique record table for my husband's gramophone (I'm pretty sure everyone in his phone has now seen a picture of it). She was super responsive and communicative and problem solved the couple of (expected) glitches in a matter of hours. We can't wait to work with her again on our next project!
Where do I even start when it comes to working with Lauren and the entire Ivory & Bone Team! To say it was the best experience, could only be described as an understatement!! From the first-time meeting Katie and Lauren, I knew they were the right fit for me! The creativity and knowledge they brought to the project was unparalleled. Their creativity truly showed no bounds. My project was a big one, a whole home renovation, with our original home being taken down to the studs. Having no clue what I was doing, nor a true vision or style in mind, Lauren walked me through every step to help me refine this so that we could get the process underway with a clear point of view. From selecting floor plan layouts, to materials, furniture, and pivoting last minute as things changed in real time, Lauren made the whole process not only seamless, but FUN! Lauren truly understands how to encapsulate your style and celebrate it while also knowing when to offer that little suggestion that may have been out of your normal comfort zone, to create a true masterpiece! I truly could not have done this project without Lauren and the entire Ivory & Bone team. They were a pleasure to work with day in and day out and I would be lucky to work with them again in the future!
Loved working with Ivory and Bone! Best in the business!
We've had an excellent experience with Ivory & Bone! Initially we were concerned that they may not be a good fit because we love color and stylized design and most of their portfolio online features a neutral palette in mid-century modern, but it turns out they do bold colors and elaborate design incredibly well, they just don't have many requests for it. We have elements of Gothic, Baroque, Rococo, Art Nouveau, and Moroccan decor in our apartment, and we absolutely LOVE the way everything is turning out! It feels so much like us, which I think is the hallmark of exceptional designers -- they don't impose an aesthetic on you, they help bring out what is uniquely you and amplify it. We tried a different designer (Casagrande) before hiring Ivory & Bone and the owner was much more interested in her vision than in ours and when we told her that we didn't care for the first round of fabric samples she showed us, she seemed exasperated ("You don't like ANY of these?!") and like were inconveniencing her by asking her to show us more options. We are SO grateful that we found Ivory & Bone after that! We have worked primarily with Lauren, who we positively adore, and despite asking her to locate items that have required many different samples, several rounds of edits, and long searches for just the right thing, she is always warm and patient and excited about what we're trying to create. We're able to be completely honest with her and tell her when we don't like something without worrying that she'll take it personally, which was not the case with Casagrande. In short, Ivory & Bone sources very interesting stuff and Katie and Lauren are just cool people... like the kind of people you'd want to hang out with even if you weren't working with them. Would highly recommend!!
Ellis and the IB team redesigned our very outdated kitchen this past fall. She is an incredibly talented designer. The entire process from design, working with our GC, installation, and follow-up went incredibly smoothly. We absolutely LOVE our kitchen. It is a stunner! It looks straight out of a magazine and she managed to create a space that reflected our style and personality as a family.
