Steveworks is a worker-owned design-build cooperative in Newton, and its reviews read like case studies rather than testimonials — detailed, project-specific, and consistently centered on sustainability. Founded in 2000 by Steve, who has since handed ownership to the co-op and stayed on as Marketing Director, the company holds an active Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration and a growing list of outside recognition: 12 Best of Houzz awards, a 2024 PRO New England Gold Award, NARI Universal Design certification, and EPA RRP (lead-safe renovation) certification. The range of projects described is wide and specific. A deep energy retrofit on a Somerville home replaced siding, windows, and doors, added a custom steel awning and fir garage door, and left the house running comfortably on a single heat pump. Another homeowner had a spare bedroom converted into a legal accessory apartment, with Steveworks navigating Newton's ADU ordinance and steering clear of VOC-heavy materials. A single-story ranch became a two-level home with an open kitchen and a new second floor. One reviewer, after "several false starts with other contractors," had leaking atrium windows finally fixed with custom argon-filled replacements — "no leaks now." Reviewers repeatedly single out the same team members by name — Steve, Tova, Asher, and Brian — for daily communication, careful dust and floor protection while living through construction, and creative problem-solving on tricky older-house details like street-curve setbacks and gas-furnace conversions. On Houzz, the profile holds a perfect 5.0 across 68 reviews, and its BBB page carries an A+ grade (the business isn't BBB Accredited). A Reddit commenter recommended Steveworks by name to someone asking for contractor recommendations in the Boston area. There's no negative account anywhere in this record — 28 written reviews across six sources, most from the past year, describing everything from kitchen and bathroom remodels to whole-house energy retrofits and additions. Between the volume of detailed, independently verifiable work and the outside recognition from Houzz and industry groups, Steveworks reads as one of the more thoroughly documented design-build firms in its area — worth a call for anyone planning a substantial renovation with sustainability in mind.

“Highly recommend Steveworks based out of Newton.”
“Steveworks recently transformed the look of our home, and we couldnt be more pleased with both the process and the results.”
We had an unfinished attic room that kept accumulating random empty boxes, so when I finally got it cleared Steveworks turned it into a beautiful bedroom. It’s now one of our favorite places in the house. They were super careful about noise and dust and coordination with subcontractors required almost nothing from us which is remarkable. They included design services and Tova was fantastic. Communication was excellent.
I had Steve remodel my Kitchen to a modern style and look and wow was I pleased! If you are looking to update your home kitchen or bathroom I highly recommend!
I found Steveworks on Houzz when I was decluttering an unfinished attic room that until recently had a gas furnace in it. We had replaced it with a heat pump, so the room could now be a finished living space. Their designer did a fantastic job laying out the space and we worked together to figure out how to deal with the ducting so the resulting boxed-out area could be used as a window seat/daybed. They were always friendly and helpful, and worked well with other companies (such as AMS HVAC) and had great subcontractors who were professional. The resulting room is beautiful, warm and cozy.
We highly recommend Steveworks! Our basement renovation turned out so much better than we imagined. Steve, Brian, Asher and Tova are skilled, creative, responsive, dependable professionals. Steveworks' commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability is what makes them stand out - the team installed an electric heat pump, an energy recovery ventilator, a heat-pump water heater, and eco-friendly Marmoleum flooring, plus custom cabinets. We'll readily call Steveworks in the future for the quality of their design and workmanship.
The Steveworks team is always a pleasure to work with! This time, they fully renovated our roof deck that was falling apart. Beyond replacing all the broken parts, they also designed and built a beautiful new trellis with large planters where we’ll grow a native pollinator garden. The vines will add shade, privacy, and even help reduce nighttime light pollution. The finished space looks fantastic, and as the plants grow in, it will become a true urban oasis. We couldn’t be happier with the results!
