Twenty-eight reviews, six different sources, and not a single negative one — that's the headline for Steveworks LLC, a worker-owned remodeling co-op in Newton that has earned a 5.0 rating on both Google (20 ratings) and Houzz (68 ratings). The company says it was founded in 2000 by Steve, who has since stepped back from ownership and now serves as marketing director while Asher, Tova, and Brian run day-to-day work; self-reported, that puts it at 26 years in business, focused on kitchens, additions, ADUs, basements, and whole-house projects with an emphasis on building science and energy efficiency. The praise repeats a consistent pattern across two years of write-ups: gut renovations, additions, ADU conversions, and energy retrofits that reviewers describe as well-communicated and cleanly finished, with the same names — Steve, Tova, Asher, Brian — showing up by name project after project. The most recent reviews back that up directly. In June, a client described Steveworks converting a cluttered, unfinished attic into a bedroom, noting how careful the crew was about noise and dust and how little coordination the project required from the homeowner. In February, a kitchen remodel client wrote that Steve personally guided the redesign and said they'd recommend Steveworks for kitchen or bathroom work. The Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor registration behind the business, #132428, checks out as active with the state. Houzz lists a Verified License badge alongside EPA RRP and NARI Universal Design certifications and recognition as a 12-time Best of Houzz winner, including a 2024 PRO New England Gold Award for an energy-efficient remodel. The Better Business Bureau gives it an A+ letter grade — though Steveworks hasn't sought formal BBB accreditation, a nuance that doesn't quite line up with Houzz separately marking it as an accredited/certified member business. One thing worth flagging: those third-party reviews, while unanimously positive, cluster in the last two years, and only two are from the past six months — thin next to the company's much longer self-reported history. For a homeowner planning a kitchen, addition, ADU, or energy-focused renovation around Newton, Steveworks is worth a call; just confirm current scheduling and get a firm quote, since neither comes up in any of the reviews.

We had an unfinished attic room that kept accumulating random empty boxes, so when I finally got it cleared Steveworks turned it into a beautiful bedroom. It’s now one of our favorite places in the house. They were super careful about noise and dust and coordination with subcontractors required almost nothing from us which is remarkable. They included design services and Tova was fantastic. Communication was excellent.

I found Steveworks on Houzz when I was decluttering an unfinished attic room that until recently had a gas furnace in it. We had replaced it with a heat pump, so the room could now be a finished living space. Their designer did a fantastic job laying out the space and we worked together to figure out how to deal with the ducting so the resulting boxed-out area could be used as a window seat/daybed. They were always friendly and helpful, and worked well with other companies (such as AMS HVAC) and had great subcontractors who were professional. The resulting room is beautiful, warm and cozy.

We highly recommend Steveworks! Our basement renovation turned out so much better than we imagined. Steve, Brian, Asher and Tova are skilled, creative, responsive, dependable professionals. Steveworks' commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability is what makes them stand out - the team installed an electric heat pump, an energy recovery ventilator, a heat-pump water heater, and eco-friendly Marmoleum flooring, plus custom cabinets. We'll readily call Steveworks in the future for the quality of their design and workmanship.

The Steveworks team is always a pleasure to work with! This time, they fully renovated our roof deck that was falling apart. Beyond replacing all the broken parts, they also designed and built a beautiful new trellis with large planters where we’ll grow a native pollinator garden. The vines will add shade, privacy, and even help reduce nighttime light pollution. The finished space looks fantastic, and as the plants grow in, it will become a true urban oasis. We couldn’t be happier with the results!
