J. MacGregor Custom Carpentry, Inc.

In December 2024 a Medfield permit went out for a new primary bedroom and bath, a family room, a walk-out basement and adjoining kitchen work — valued at $470,000. The contractor on it was J. MacGregor Custom Carpentry, a Bellingham shop that started as, and still calls itself, a carpenter's business. Jason Macgregor started it in 2005, after four years in the Marine Corps straight out of high school and a stretch working for local builders. The company describes itself as veteran-owned, and says family — his father Ron among them — works in it regularly. The permit history runs from a 2010 Newton kitchen through a finished Newtonville basement in 2012, a Framingham sunroom and a gut master bathroom, up to that Medfield addition: seven permitted jobs, almost all in the Newton–Wellesley–Natick belt the company says it serves. The licensing is clean where it counts. The Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active and held in the company's own name. Houzz separately lists a construction supervisor licence, and BuildZoom records an older home improvement registration, #146304, as inactive and at one point cancelled — a superseded number rather than the current one, but worth raising. What's absent is customers. Neither BuildZoom nor Houzz carries a single review, so nothing published speaks to how a job runs day to day. If you want a hands-on carpenter who also takes whole additions in MetroWest, this is a reasonable shortlist entry. Ask about that earlier cancelled registration, ask for the Medfield or Newton homeowners as references, and get a copy of the insurance certificate the Houzz page claims.
