A May 2025 Google reviewer accused James Roberts Roofing of taking advance payment, abandoning an unfinished job and refusing to return the remaining budget. The customer said the unfinished work was left without a tarp, allowing snow and rain into the building, and that materials and tools remained in the yard for months. They also alleged that the contractor tried to hide the job from the building inspector and tried to make them pay a stop-work penalty. These are the customer's allegations. The Westhampton business advertises new roof construction, roof repairs, and gutter installation and repairs. Its website names Northampton as a service area, offers free estimates and says it has been in business for 25 years. The Better Business Bureau profile attributes additional offerings to the company, including siding, windows and skylights. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, number 117154 under James Roberts, is expired. Other dated customers described different experiences. In a November 2025 Google review, one praised punctuality, fair prices and doing what was promised, recommending the business for roof repairs or driveway plowing. A December 2024 reviewer thanked Mr. Roberts for his service. Google lists a 2.8-star average from 11 ratings. A September 2018 reviewer described waiting weeks for a rubber roof on a dormer. The customer called the office and spoke with the owner's wife; the owner then called back, said the materials had just arrived and promised to come in two days. The customer said the work was done fine but was unhappy with the service and would not hire the business again. An August 2010 reviewer alleged damaged gutters, plantings and screens, nails left in the yard and driveway, and work starting early despite a request for a later arrival. That customer said nails had ended up in their tires and described noise at 5:30 and hammering at 6:30 in the morning.
“Good man, great work. Shows up on time, does what he says, and charges fair prices. Highly recommend for anyone who needs a roof fixed or driveway plowed.
Took payment in advance and then abandoned the job and refused to return the remainder of the budget. Also attempted to hide the job from the building inspector, tried to make me pay for his "stop-work" penalty, left materials and tools out in my yard for months, and didn't even put a tarp over their unfinished job before abandoning it, allowing snow and rain to get in the building. There's a reason he's available.
Thank you Mr. Roberts for everything. You are truly a great person. May You have many more years of great service. Bring some doggy treats if your ever near.
Were supposed to roll a new rubber roof on a dormer, and took weeks to get to it. It took calling the number and talking to the owner's wife, told me he'd call me back. She must have read him the riot act because he called back, said that the materials had just been delivered, and he'd be there in two days to do the work. They did the work fine, but I'll never call them back for more work - worst service ever.
You will need to replace your gutters after they destroy them. They kill your bushes, and gardens and rake up all your mulch! They don't hang tarps up the side of your house to protect it from damage. They leave nails all over the yard and driveway (nails in the tires thanks to them). They damage your screens and don't tell you about it. Nothing like a size 12 foot hole through a brand new screen! And if you work nights, they don't understand what time 9AM really is! They show up earlier when you ask them to come a LITTLE later. 5:30 is awfully early to be making noise outside my window and 6:30 is early to be pounding your hammer over my bed. I wouldn't recommend hiring these guys for even a dog house roof.
