KVC Builders

A builder whose typical job on Houzz starts at $50,000 and runs to eight figures, and whose permit file includes a $1,335,000, 12,619-square-foot house in Harwich Port. KVC Builders — Koulopoulos Vona & Company — works at the top of the residential market: custom homes on the coast, gut renovations of Boston-area houses, and the maintenance contracts that follow them. Four owner/managing partners run it: Jim Koulopoulos, Brian Vona, Matt Kaufmann and Tom Tocci. The company says it has been at this for more than 40 years, with the Koulopoulos-Vona partnership spanning over twenty. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active in the company's own name, and BuildZoom scores it 99, above 85% of the 139,240 Massachusetts contractors it tracks, off 14 permitted projects with six in the last three years. The praise on file comes as much from the trade as from homeowners. An architect writing in December 2013 about a substantial Wellesley renovation credited the team with resolving complex framing and executing custom detailing in clear-finished wood and exposed structural steel. Another architect that same month said the quality of the finished product never got lost in the schedule-and-budget discipline the job demanded. A 2014 client put it plainly and pointed to the five-year warranty — the same warranty Boston Magazine picked out in a 2023 Best of Boston Home write-up praising the Waltham-based firm's integrity and professionalism. The magazine's Best Builder, General Excellence citation names cofounders Koulopoulos and Vona. Editors have followed the work too. New England Home ran a tour of a Chatham shingle-style house with KVC credited as builder in May 2024, and in 2022 described a nineteen-acre coastal estate where the company's project managers worked alongside Shope Reno Wharton and Hawk Design to turn an eighteenth-century captain's house into guest quarters. In April 2020 the firm manufactured and donated intubation boxes to UConn Health and other area hospitals. Now the honest caveat. Almost the whole written review record is twelve years old: of thirteen reviews on file, twelve were posted in 2013 and 2014, several of them naming the predecessor brand Ken Vona Construction, and most were written by architects, designers and subcontractors rather than the people who paid for the houses. Only one account has been added since — an April 2025 Google review calling the property managers dedicated and accountable. BuildZoom's own blurb also credits the company with seven years of experience against the website's forty. If you're building or gutting a house at the high end and want a builder architects are comfortable working beside, KVC belongs on the shortlist. Ask for recent client references rather than the ones posted online, and get the five-year warranty terms in writing.
