Land Design Associates is a design-build landscaping firm founded by James Egan — a Massachusetts Certified Landscape Professional who the company says learned the trade from a stone mason before studying landscape design and site engineering — and has grown, over what the company describes as more than 30 years, into a team with multiple named designers rather than a single-person operation. Jason Hoffenberg, Steve Roach, Rebecca Little, and others each show up repeatedly across the reviews, each credited with their own long list of full-property transformations. The pattern across the reviews is consistent: a design process that starts with real back-and-forth — multiple option reviews, budget conversations, iteration on a plan — before a crew executes it, often for genuinely substantial projects. A 2024 review described a multi-acre, year-and-a-half design-build in Cohasset with a custom patio, outdoor kitchen, and pool renovation. A late-2025 review described a backyard that had been a literal gravel pit taken down to soil and rebuilt with a stone patio, walkway, and new sod. A 2025 review described drainage and grading problems solved as part of a larger front-yard hardscape build. Several clients describe working with the company across multiple projects and years — a 2025 review described a 20-plus-year relationship across several homes, and a 2024 review described three years of patio, hardscaping, and drainage work with the same designer. Not every review is positive, and the negatives are specific enough to take seriously. A June 2026 review described a full backyard design that was agreed to but not followed through on-site, including fences installed in the wrong places. A December 2025 review, from a neighbor rather than a customer, described a crew blowing leaves and debris into their yard and reacting dismissively when asked to stop. And an October 2025 review described a curt, dismissive phone response when a neighbor called to ask when a noisy job would wrap up. None of these describe the core design work itself going wrong — the complaints are about execution follow-through and how the crew handled a courtesy issue — but for a company operating at this scale and volume, they're a real, if minority, pattern worth asking about: how design deviations get caught and fixed, and how neighbors and courtesy calls get handled on-site. For a substantial landscape design-build project — patios, pools, drainage, full-property transformations — in the towns west and south of Boston the company serves, this is an established, MCLP-certified firm with a deep bench of named designers and a large volume of detailed, specific praise; given the size of the operation, it's worth confirming who's actually managing execution on-site and getting design deviations addressed in writing as they come up.
The most professional Landscaping and. design company. Their work is amazing
They handle all of my landscape needs. They do a great job, very reliable and always responsive.
If you have lots of time and enjoy babysitting a company you hire for every single task they do, hire Land Design Associates. LDA worked on, and we agreed to, a full design for a backyard landscape project, but it was never followed. Wrong fences installed in the wrong places, things we specifically asked for are completely ignored. We had them do landscape maintenance afterwards to keep a plant warranty and that isn’t any better unfortunately. We ask for black mulch, they install brown. We send multiple emails on specific plants that need to be replaced, they install the wrong ones. This company is a mess and very poorly run.
Jason made this an incredible experience! Last fall, he came out to my little property and I was able to share my vision with him. We had a great conversation about how the property would look. He took such great care of the project and my wishes while also using his vast knowledge and experience to guide the final product. We agreed on a plan and he kept up consistent communication until the project began in early May. Jason (designer) and Ervin (product manager) were the dynamic duo during the construction/ installation phase. They were attentive to the project and took great care of my property and the neighbors. The team that installed did an outstanding job. Looking forward to working with LDA on the maintenance now. Can’t recommend more. Thank you Jason and Ervin!
The Land Design Architect, Project Manager and Crew did a spectacular job in both design and build of our large patio, stone walls and new landscaping. They not only finished on time but within budget. I very highly recommend Land Design. We are thrilled with our new patio for entertaining, surrounded by our lovely landscaping and lighting, bravo!
