Land Design Associates

Land Design Associates is a Walpole design-build outfit that treats a backyard like a project, not a mow-and-blow route — full drawn plans, named designers, multi-week hardscape and planting builds. The company says its founder, James Egan, a Mass. Certified Landscape Professional, has run it for over 30 years, and today it operates with a bench of designers customers call out by name, including Jason Hoffenberg, Rebecca Little, and Steve Roach. That designer-led model shows up throughout 73 reviews going back to 2021: patios and stone walls finished on time and within budget, drainage problems solved mid-project, and repeat customers who've stuck with the crew for years. In a 2026 review one client described a three-year relationship across multiple properties, and in a 2024 review another described a year-and-a-half, multi-acre design-build in Cohasset. The work described most often is full-yard transformation — turning a gravel pit or an overgrown lot into a finished patio-and-planting landscape — alongside irrigation, drainage correction, and snow removal for existing clients. Not every account matches that picture. In a 2026 review, a customer said an agreed backyard design wasn't followed through, citing fences installed in the wrong places among other issues. Two more complaints from late 2025 describe rougher edges away from the design table: a neighbor of a customer said a cleanup crew blew leaves and debris into an adjoining yard, and a caller said a phone inquiry about a job's finish time got a dismissive response. None describe a walked-away or unresolved job, but they're worth asking about directly, especially on a project built around a detailed custom design. For a full design-build landscape project — a new patio, a drainage fix, a yard rebuilt from scratch — Land Design Associates has one of the more established, better-documented track records in the area. Ask specifically who your designer will be and get the finished plan in writing before work starts, given the one account of a design not being followed.
