The permits tell the story better than the reviews do. LoPilato Construction Corp's building-permit file runs to 20 projects, and they are not small: new three-family and single-family houses in Jamaica Plain at $760,000 and $376,200, a $365,117 addition and remodel in Auburndale, a multi-permit Hingham renovation that reworked ceilings, two bathrooms, a mudroom and a kitchen. Houzz puts its typical job between $150,000 and $2 million. Marc LoPilato runs it with Sean Flaherty from Canton, and the company says it has been building for greater Boston clients since 2001. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, number 192826, is active in the company's name, and BBB accreditation goes back to July 2005 with an A+ grade and no complaints on file. What customers say is warm but scarce — three written accounts across 12 years, all five stars. The most useful is from May 2024: a homeowner whose house Marc built in 2005 had him back for a face-lift and described a custom safety gate for the top of the stairs with a pass-through door cut for the cat. A 2021 buyer had compared several new-construction condos in the area and kept coming back to the LoPilato-built one for its detail. From 2012, an owner said Marc met with their architect himself when the plans hit trouble. Two things worth knowing before calling. The written record is thin — three reviews is not much to weigh a $500,000 build on, so ask for recent references and addresses you can go look at. And the company's paper trail is scattered: its own site still describes "our success over the past seventeen years", the BBB file lists 10 Albert St while BuildZoom and Houzz list 399 Neponset St, and BuildZoom shows two older Massachusetts home improvement registrations as cancelled alongside the current active one. The outside references are procedural rather than promotional. A 2019 Jamaica Plain Gazette article described Marc LoPilato reporting test-pit results back to abutting neighbours during a contested foundation project, and the town of Canton's records carry a wetlands Notice of Intent filed by the company for a demolition and rebuild — the sort of work that goes through boards, not around them. The right call for a custom home, a large addition, or a whole-house renovation in Canton, Milton, Hingham, Newton or Jamaica Plain.
