Marquis Tree Service is a Woburn-based tree care company that owns its own cranes and works across Greater Boston and the Merrimack Valley, on residential, commercial, municipal and golf-course properties. John Marquis owns it; the Better Business Bureau records the corporation as started in December 2003, lists 19 employees, and files the company at 9 Sterling Rd in North Billerica. Crane work is what they get hired for. In a January 2021 review a homeowner said another company had backed out of a hazardous pine removal because its crane was not large enough, and Marquis took it down; a June 2020 customer described four trees felled in about two hours, with the crew returning the same day for the large logs. Angi publishes 4.9 stars from 226 ratings, 95 percent of them five-star, and the Better Business Bureau has accredited the company since June 2012 at an A+ grade. On r/boston in August 2024 a commenter reported using Marquis several times and recommending them, and another commenter pointed out that the company owns its cranes. The most recent account is a complaint, and it is worth reading before booking. In a May 2026 Angi review a homeowner reports that pruning and thinning was left unfinished on the first visit but billed in full, that the company acknowledged this and returned twice more, that a stump grinder arrived unannounced weeks later, that the crew then said they never help move rocks although the estimate said they would try, and that a manager refused to finish the stump grinding unless she paid to have fencing removed, and was disrespectful by phone. Price on awkward access is the other live question: a r/boston commenter reported in October 2024 being told the job would be very expensive because a crane could not get close enough. Two things here are the company's own word rather than an outside record. Its arborist credentials — ISA Certified Arborist, Board Certified Master Arborist, OSHA 10-Hour safety training, and Massachusetts Arborists Association and Tree Care Industry Association membership — are stated on its own site. And its founding date is given as 1993 on both its site and its Angi profile, while the Better Business Bureau records the business as started and incorporated in December 2003. A 2016 Massachusetts case report separately names Marquis Tree Services, Inc. as a defendant in litigation over work it took on as a subcontractor in February 2009. They are the right call for a big, awkward removal that needs a crane and a crew that cleans up after itself. Before signing, get the pruning and thinning specification itemized in writing, confirm exactly what stump grinding includes and what site access it assumes, and ask to see the arborist certifications and current insurance.

I hired Marquis Tree Service to remove several trees and prune/thin tall trees on my property. During the first visit, they failed to complete the pruning/thinning work but still charged me in full. After I complained, they agreed the work was incomplete and had to return twice more to finish it. I also scheduled stump grinding near a rock wall and fence. The estimate stated they would ?try to help? with rocks around the stump if needed. I removed some rocks beforehand, but no one explained how much needed to be cleared. Weeks later, a stump grinder showed up unexpectedly with no notice. The technician then said I needed to remove six feet of rocks and claimed they ?never? help move rocks despite what the estimate said. A manager later refused to complete the stump grinding unless I paid to remove sections of fencing. He repeatedly interrupted me and was very disrespectful on the phone. Overall, very poor communication and customer service.
We needed tree pruning and the crew did a great job!
Very professional and great response time. All three workers were diligent and did a great job with the clean up afterwards. Extremely pleased with their service.
I am very happy with the work the Marquis team did for me. Three people; one is a woman. I applaud hiring women for this type of work; thank you, Marquis. They did exactly what I wanted done; the correct amount of trimming of big branches to open up more light on my deck and stop leaves and birds from making a mess throughout the year. I did not have to tell the crew what to do; they are the professionals and did a great job. I will be recommending Marquis to others; their quote came in much lower than other arborists; and I was very pleased with the result. GOOD value. Good cleanup.
They're all very professional. Did what we asked them to do. Did an excellent job.
