Massachusetts Woodworks is a one-person shop in Gloucester run by Darren Taylor, a second-generation Master Woodworker who builds one-of-a-kind furniture and built-ins rather than running a framing or trim crew. The company describes its focus as commercial and residential built-ins alongside custom, commissioned furniture pieces, serving Gloucester, the North Shore, and the greater Boston area; outside coverage has separately noted Taylor running a fully equipped shop in the city. On Google, the shop holds a 5.0-star average across 11 ratings. Its broader review history — nine reviews logged between 2022 and 2023 across a handful of sources — carries the same tone throughout, with no complaint or dispute turning up anywhere in what's available to check. Before calling, it helps to be clear on scope: this is a bespoke furniture and built-in specialist, not a general carpentry outfit for framing, decks, or trim — commissions are described as one-off pieces made in the shop, often for interior designers and architects, rather than larger remodeling projects. The review count also stays modest — 9 to 11 ratings total — so it's worth confirming current availability and lead time directly. That makes Massachusetts Woodworks the right call for a homeowner or designer after a specific, made-to-order piece — a built-in, a table, a commissioned item — crafted by one dedicated woodworker, rather than a contractor for broader carpentry or remodeling work.

Darren Taylor is a professional and a hell of a craftsman. He created a beautiful sign for my father that will be part of his home for decades. Perfect gift for a man who THOUGHT he had everything!

Darren made me a large mirror with an ambrosia maple frame, that came out excellent. Working with him was easy, he was very flexible and happy to create whatever I wanted.

MW did a great job on my shadow boxes that I use in my pinball business. Quality work, attention to detail, and personalized service sets them apart. I love seeing the quality woodwork when I visit the shop. Give them a try for you next project!!!

We used Mass Woodworks for a couple custom wood features in our kitchen renovation. Darren was great to work with, and knew just what we were looking for. He crafted a large walnut cap to cover a huge steel beam we had in our kitchen, and installed it. He also made some beautiful built in walnut shelves for our kitchen. He worked with us on the design, built and installed everything, and recommended care and maintenance for the pieces. It was a big project and we used many contractors... Darren was one of the best! We will not hesitate to call him again for our next project.
