Massachusetts Woodworks is a one-person custom woodworking shop in Gloucester, run by Darren Taylor, a second-generation master woodworker. By its own description, the shop specializes in one-of-a-kind built-ins, custom furniture, and small commissioned pieces for homeowners and design/build professionals across Massachusetts and New England. A 2014 post described Darren as having close to two decades in the woodworking industry at that point, running a fully equipped shop since 2008. On Google, the shop holds a 5★ average from 11 ratings, and all nine individual reviews on file — spanning 2022 into 2023 — are five stars, each describing a distinct custom piece. A 2023 review described Darren crafting and installing a large walnut cap to cover a steel beam during a kitchen renovation, along with other custom wood features. Other reviews describe a live-edge slab table built from scratch — picking the slab, sourcing the legs, and preserving its natural features — a custom game table designed so dice and cards don't slip off, an ambrosia maple-framed mirror, and personalized shadow boxes for a customer's pinball business. What repeats across nearly every review is attention to detail and a collaborative process: reviewers describe Darren working closely with them from concept to finished piece, and several call the resulting furniture the kind that gets passed down for generations rather than replaced. Nothing among the reviews raises a concern — every one on file is five stars, and each describes a different, specific commission. For custom furniture, built-ins, or one-of-a-kind commissioned woodwork, Massachusetts Woodworks has a small but consistently strong and detailed track record.

“Darren Taylor has close to two decades in the woodworking industry and has operated a fully equipped shop since 2008.”
Darren Taylor is a professional and a hell of a craftsman. He created a beautiful sign for my father that will be part of his home for decades. Perfect gift for a man who THOUGHT he had everything!
Darren made me a large mirror with an ambrosia maple frame, that came out excellent. Working with him was easy, he was very flexible and happy to create whatever I wanted.
MW did a great job on my shadow boxes that I use in my pinball business. Quality work, attention to detail, and personalized service sets them apart. I love seeing the quality woodwork when I visit the shop. Give them a try for you next project!!!
We used Mass Woodworks for a couple custom wood features in our kitchen renovation. Darren was great to work with, and knew just what we were looking for. He crafted a large walnut cap to cover a huge steel beam we had in our kitchen, and installed it. He also made some beautiful built in walnut shelves for our kitchen. He worked with us on the design, built and installed everything, and recommended care and maintenance for the pieces. It was a big project and we used many contractors... Darren was one of the best! We will not hesitate to call him again for our next project.
I love my specially made table. Incredibly sturdy and again - well-loved. Thank you Darren.
