Merry Maids of Boston operates as a franchise of the national Merry Maids (ServiceMaster) brand; its own site says the current owners bought the Boston office in 2015, though the location has served the area for decades before that. It says it covers Allston, Cambridge, Somerville, Dorchester and several other Boston neighborhoods. The written record here is short — nine reviews on file — but strikingly consistent. In a January 2026 review, a customer describes being told that if the home turns out dirtier than estimated, the price goes up; a December 2025 review describes the same pattern on a $280 booking for one cleaner in a two-bed, two-bath home, with the crew arriving and then calling it dirtier than expected before pushing to charge more. A September 2025 review says a nearly $300 three-bedroom cleaning left floors, counters, mirrors and radiators largely untouched, after a last-minute call from the owner or manager beforehand. Several reviews from mid-2025 separately describe confrontational, rude phone calls with staff, unconnected to any specific cleaning visit. Older reviews describe real losses: a 2022 review says a $280 dress was thrown out along with boxes during a cleaning, and another from the same year describes broken items over a year of service plus extra charges appearing on a stored card without explanation. A 2024 review says the company, despite describing itself as Boston-based, declined to service Hyde Park and Jamaica Plain. There's also a labor dispute in the company's public history: a federal appeals case and a labor-violation tracking database both describe a $6,106 back-pay penalty from an unfair-labor-practices finding, tied to the 2015 change in ownership. The Better Business Bureau lists the business as not accredited, with no letter grade published. Given how consistently the same complaints repeat — upcharges sprung after arrival, hostile phone service, and lost or damaged belongings — across reviews spanning nearly four years, get a firm price in writing before booking, and weigh this pattern carefully against other cleaners covering the same neighborhoods.

I'm so glad I looked at the review's first. This sounds like a nightmare. And the response from them is that if we come in and as dirty than what we think it is we going to charge you more what kind of company is this? This is what I call a SHARK 🦈🦈🦈🦈. I CAN JUST IMAGINE HOW MUCH THEY CHARGE YOU TO DO A WHOLE HOUSE. 🤔🤔
TRUST THE REVIEWS, $280 for 1 cleaner in a 2 bed/ 2 bath house, ridiculous. They ask you to rate how dirty your apartment is, then they arrive and tell you it's dirtier than they thought, and try to upcharge you, threatening to not be able to clean entire house given how dirty it is. They ask for no photos prior, give you no confirmation on when the cleaners will arrive, cost, and details on the cleaning. $
AVOID this service. We paid almost $300 for a 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom cleaning, and the results were terrible. The floors, kitchen surfaces, mirrors, radiators, and bathroom were left virtually untouched (see photos). The issues started when the owner/manager called last minute to reschedule our original appointment. After the cleaning, we immediately reached out with calls, texts, and photos showing how poorly the job was done. Instead of taking responsibility, the owner made excuses and insisted on coming to the apartment to ‘inspect’ it. When he arrived, he became defensive and even somewhat aggressive with me. I was alone at the apartment with my boyfriend on FaceTime, and he had to step in because of how the owner was speaking to me. We walked through the apartment and showed him multiple areas that were clearly not cleaned. In the bathroom, he even said that if we wanted the tubs cleaned properly, it would cost an extra $50—even though that should have been included in the original price. We agreed on a list of areas to be re-cleaned, but when I texted him afterward to confirm, he denied most of what we had just discussed and responded in a very unprofessional way. The cleaners did come back, but only stayed for about 35 minutes and addressed just one item from the list. Overall, this business was unprofessional, dishonest, and felt like a waste of time and money. The quality of cleaning was awful, the owner was rude and aggressive, and the entire experience was stressful and disappointing. Save your money and avoid this service.
After being warned this would happen, it happened, some very unprofessional and disrespectful phone etiquette on the other side of the line. Existing, potential, canceling, and declining customers deserve the same positive attitude from customer service. The Angie's List reviews seemed good, so maybe this is just a situation of occasional "bad apple" behavior. Regardless, this poor behavior happened, and, honestly, it makes me sad to bear witness to it. Next time, I'd highly recommend whoever was on the other side of that call to layoff the terminal man-baby energy. It's just common sense.
Man was very rude on phone; confrontational; do not book; I had just called back because an unknown number had called several times and the man was so rude when I just said service wasn’t needed anymore. Rudely just saying “why did you call back then?!??” Like dude…it’s a business…why are you in this industry if you can’t handle some phone calls… Edit: A voice message of garble was left. There was no way of knowing it was a personal cell. I was not the one that hung up. I said not one rude thing. After I realized what the number was I politely indicated that I no longer needed the service and would have left it at that had it not been for the confrontation after. And based on these other reviews, it seems you will not responsibility for your own tone or actions, based on the words about paying customers & potential ones
