Milltown Plumbing, Heating, AC, Drain Cleaning & Electrical has been running out of Chelmsford, Massachusetts since 1979, and the company says it's still family-owned. With combined ratings north of 1,900 across the Better Business Bureau, Best Pick Reports, Angi and BuildZoom, it's one of the more heavily reviewed plumbing and HVAC outfits in the Merrimack Valley — a 4.6 to 4.8-star average depending on the platform. What shows up again and again in the reviews is speed and specific technicians. Customers writing between 2019 and 2026 keep naming names: Pedro cleared a kitchen sink blockage the same day it was called in, Devin worked two days straight in a heat wave to get an AC unit running, and Josh added an electrical outlet for a water-heater monitor while doing other work. A 2019 review described a technician spending a day and a half tracking down a hidden leak in a system 'no one in ten years' had been able to figure out. The Better Business Bureau lists the company A+ and accredited, and Best Pick Reports has certified it as a Best Pick for ten straight years. The thing worth asking about before booking is pricing on bigger jobs. The most recent write-up on Best Pick Reports is a detailed complaint about a tankless water heater replacement — the customer said Milltown charged $5,800 for what should have run closer to $3,000, and that the workmanship left a drain valve positioned so the system couldn't be properly drained; the company's response offered a $500 service credit rather than a price adjustment. A 2024 Angi review raises a similar concern on a smaller scale — $1,200 to rebuild two toilet tanks, which the customer priced out against $20 parts and felt was steep, though Milltown's reply defended the number as covering parts, labor and its service guarantee. An older, 2018 review described a garbage disposal and appliance-hookup job that dragged through repeated no-shows and unreturned calls before it was resolved. Licensing here is claimed rather than independently confirmed: BuildZoom lists an active Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor registration for the company, along with a sheet-metal business license and a separate plumbing business license, though BuildZoom itself flags the latter two as unverified. Worth noting, too, that BBB's profile prints a Nashua, NH address while BuildZoom and Best Pick both use the Chelmsford, MA one — likely a second office rather than an error, given the company's own claim to serve both Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire, but ask which office is handling the job. For routine plumbing, heating and AC calls, the volume of positive, specific reviews is hard to ignore. For a large-ticket replacement job, get the price in writing up front and ask what's included — the sharpest complaints on file are about invoices that grew past what the work seemed to justify.
I was super happy with Mill Town beginning with the first phone call and ending with the installation of a new Watts Intelli-Flow for my washer. Everyone was really nice and professional and kept me informed of when people were coming and how long it would take for the part to come in. I had a number of questions and Ed answered every one. Ask about their service plan that gives a discount to services. I thought it was a great deal! I will only use them going forward for HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing. If I could give a 10, I would. Thank you so much for a wonderful serve experience. Highly recommend!
We had a great experience with MillTown. Our AC unit needed repairs, and their technician, Devin, worked for two days in sweltering heat to get everything fixed and running properly again. Devin was professional, hardworking, and dedicated to making sure the job was done right. He never seemed rushed despite the challenging conditions. I truly appreciate the outstanding service and commitment. Thank you, Devin and the entire MillTown team, for going above and beyond. I highly recommend MillTown for their professionalism and exceptional customer service!
From the sales (shout out Tyler) to the techs doing the job (Eric, Jared, and Mike) everything was really well explained, left clean and tidy, and made our family feeling very comfortable with the decision we made for our new heat pump. Highly recommend for the service and their great quality work!
Milltown answered the call immediately and was able to replace my water heater in record time. Pauric and Ed are masters of their trade. Very pleased with their work. Much appreciated. In addition, Josh installed a new electrical outlet for my Water Heater monitoring system in record time.
UPDATE: I was blown away by how quickly this was handled. Fred, the owner, called me first thing the very next morning and couldn't have been nicer super down to earth, easy to talk to, and truly understanding. He immediately sent out his senior plumber to take care of everything I wanted addressed, and the work was outstanding. Between Fred's personal attention and the excellent quality of the work, this was an all around fantastic experience. I couldn't be happier with how the tankless hot water system turned out. Highly recommend them, thank you Fred and team. We had our HVAC and tankless unit installed by MillTown in 2020 as part of a hydronic heating system. A month ago, the commercial‑grade tank they installed failed. Rheem covered the tank under warranty, but MillTown charged $5,800 for the replacement — which was essentially a retrofit with minimal changes. After reviewing the work, it was clear the job should have been closer to $3,000 based on industry standards and actual scope. Unfortunately, the workmanship was disappointing. The system was left in a condition that doesn't reflect professional standards — including a drain valve positioned against another pipe, making it impossible to drain the system properly. I provided photos and a detailed email to MillTown expressing these concerns. Their response was that there "wasn't much to do," and they offered only a $500 credit toward a future service. Given the excessive pricing and the quality of work, a credit for a future service wasn't a reasonable solution, and I declined it. Another concern: their website offers no way to contact the owner or any managers directly. For a company that presents itself as family‑run, that lack of transparency says a lot. Overall, the experience was frustrating — from the high cost to the poor workmanship to the dismissive response. Based on this, I cannot recommend MillTown for plumbing or HVAC services.pics show 2 of new tank and 1 of original can see drain valve on pipe !!
