New England Design & Construction runs on one idea: architects and builders under the same roof, not handed off between phases. The Lexington firm says it's operated that way for more than 20 years, led by CEO Dave Supple, working across Greater Boston towns like Newton, Cambridge, Wayland, and Coolidge Corner out of its Bedford Street office. The praise holds up across five separate sources, which is unusual for a design-build shop this size. GuildQuality's independent client surveys — a program built specifically to keep contractors honest — put the company at a 96% likely-to-recommend rate with a 4.7 average, and it's earned GuildQuality's Guild Master customer-service award for 12 consecutive years. Google shows 5 stars across 34 ratings, and Houzz has named it a Best of Houzz winner 19 times. In its two most recent Google reviews — one from a couple whose city condominium got a full renovation, another from a client who had a barn built — the same thread runs through both: the design side and the construction side talk to each other well, and the finished work comes with a five-year warranty. The scale here points to a boutique operation rather than a high-volume remodeler — GuildQuality recorded around 15 completed jobs in a recent year — and outside coverage has described it as a luxury design-build firm, so this isn't the call for a quick, budget-conscious fix. Its Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor license (HIC #167855) is active with the state, and it keeps licensed architects on staff, which is how it gets to 3D-rendered designs before anyone picks up a hammer. Supple has also chaired the state chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, and the company belongs to the Lexington Chamber of Commerce — both signs it's plugged into the local trade community rather than operating at arm's length from it. It's a strong fit for a full kitchen, bathroom, or whole-home remodel, an addition, or a historic renovation where having one team own both the design and the build matters more than speed or price. Given how few projects it takes on in a year, the practical question to ask upfront is where a project would land in its current schedule.

NEDC appealed to us because of the Design Build offering, and their excellent reputation for truly caring about their client’s needs, so much so they have a five year warranty on all their work. We selected them for our total renovation of a city condominium. NEDC’s communication fluidity between designers and the construction team made clear their understanding of each other’s language. They were clear about challenges from the start, and their combined knowledge about the space allows everyone to go into the project being smarter and more pragmatic. The communication with us, the client, and their adherence to a disciplined process was foundational to the success of the project. Once construction starts things happen in the field. There’s a reality that hits. The top designers in the world can’t predict field challenges, the ones that happen once you get into the space, ie, there’s a unique condition in a ceiling or wall, etc. So having an experienced and caring project manager, seamlessly working with the design team, one who respects the design process, enables the dialogue to continue throughout the project. My view is that a project is constantly in design phase, but it changes context once you are in the implementation/construction phase- that open dialogue between the project manager and design team is critical to the success of the construction, and the beauty of NEDC’s budgeting process is that communication time is built into their process, no extra charges for the time spent for their internal teams to talk to each other! The conversations between the design team and the construction team are critical to keeping things on track, that’s the other part of the NEDC process, their priority is it to be on budget and on time. No surprises. They accomplished that for us. I mean, that doesn’t just happen!

We just worked with NEDC on building a barn and we had a wonderful experience with them. Great attention to detail, responsive communication and a high quality of work. Looking forward to the next one with them.

NEDC completed remodeled our bathrooms about nine years ago, and they have held up great. But recently one of the rollers on the shower door broke. I contacted them just to see if they could identify the parts we neeeded and where to get them, but they went much further, finding the part and vendor in their records, working with the vendor to find a replacement, and had it sent to our house (at no cost). I was able to do the repair myself, but NEDC made it clear they would send someone to help if needed. It's a big relief to know that even after 10 years, as things age and wear out, we can go back to NEDC for help keeping things like new.
