Sonny picks up the phone. That is the line Nutmeg Roofing Company's customers come back to: two 2025 Google reviewers said he answered on the first call, and one had an estimate in under 15 minutes and a finished roof three days later. A 2026 Reddit commenter on r/Connecticut said the company answered the first call and quoted over the phone using aerial footage of the house. The Orange, CT roofer works the New Haven and Fairfield County shoreline, holds 4.7 stars from 69 Google ratings and an A+ from the BBB, and offers free estimates. Leak repair is the core of the work. A 2024 reviewer described a sunroom leak assessed the same day, fixed ahead of schedule, and a follow-up visit to replace shingles the crew had cracked. Two other 2024 reviewers had long-running chimney leaks solved with new flashing, and a February 2026 reviewer said Sonny handled an ice-dam leak the same Saturday, working into the night before a blizzard. Roof replacements come up as well: in May 2025 a Fairfield reviewer said the crew finished a whole roof in a day and a half, and an April 2026 reviewer credited foreman Chris for coordinating with the insurance adjuster and the solar panels. Customers also mention gutters, slate repairs and winter snow removal. The complaints are serious. A customer who paid more than $26,000 to rebuild a covered pergola roof wrote in 2026 that it was built flat, with water pooling and beams sagging; the customer says the company refused certified mail and requests for its insurance, and that they filed a complaint with the state in August 2026. In a January 2023 review, a customer said a leak was misdiagnosed, the company's own foreman called the fix a bad job, and no repair or refund followed. Reviewers in 2023, 2024 and 2025 also described estimate appointments that never happened, including an October 2025 wait of two hours that the reviewer said the company admitted in a text was not traffic. Its Connecticut home improvement contractor registration, HIC.0650345, is active in the name Nutmeg Roofing.
“Nutmeg - answered on the first call and gave me a quote over the phone using aerial footage of my house. Could start within 1-2 weeks.”
Update, October 10, 2026: I sent Sonny Mitchell at Nutmeg Roofing a certified letter with request for his insurance, a contract, and demand from reparations. He refused the certified mail. I contacted an attorney to file for damages and reparations. His advice was that Sonny Mitchell likely would not have the money to pay a refund and lawyers fees as would be expected in a successful claim with the Connecticut Consumer Protection. If you deal with Sonny Mitchell, be wary of his glib assurances, get a contract, permit, and insurance policy, and be sure his repair plan meets at least minimal roofing standards! Today, August 17, 2026, I filed a formal complaint with the state of Connecticut demanding a refund or a rebuild of the faulty roof that Sonny Michell and nutmeg roofing installed. After a certified letter from August 5 demanding the company’s insurance was ignored, I’m forced to seek remediation from the state and town building departments. Today, August 3, 2026 Sonny Mitchell reiterated his absurd lie that I spent $26,000 for Nutmeg Roofing to build a roof that would leak. I contracted with Sonny Mitchell of Nutmeg Roofing 18 months ago to rebuild a covered pergola roof on our home. His subcontractors spent weeks rebuilding the framing and plastic top for more than $26,000. They rebuilt the roof entirely flat, leaving no pitch for water to runoff. There are hundreds of pounds of stagnant water pooling on this structure, sagging beams, peeling beam wraps. The entire structure will have to be rebuilt. Sonny’s email to me was ‘I told you it would leak’, which is absurd and a lie. The entire reason for the expenditure was to address the pooling water from the previous roof.
Sonny answered all my questions. Estimate was done very fast…happy about the work they did on my roof and gutters …
served Nutmeg Roofing with a formal legal demand letter via certified mail and email, requesting a written plan to re-pitch the roof structure, replace the water-damaged timber, or provide General Liability Insurance (COI) details to file a property damage claim. Nutmeg Roofing refused to provide written insurance details or a formal technical repair plan, attempting instead to relegate the dispute to informal, unwritten "man-to-man" conversations. When I replied insisting on a formal written plan to establish proper pitch and repair the peeling timber, Nutmeg Roofing ceased all communication and refused to respond further. REQUESTED RELIEF I request that the Department of Consumer Protection open a formal investigation into Registration #HIC.0650345 for Home Improvement Act non-compliance, unworkmanlike performance causing property damage, and failure to honor warranty obligations, and mediate/enforce the following remedy: 1. Full structural correction (re-engineering the roof pitc
