Bob Kohn's outfit — BK Remodeling, also trading as Bob Kohn's Handyman Service — works out of Methuen and pitches the whole range by its own reckoning, from a $500 repair to a $250,000 job: kitchens, bathrooms, basements, porches, sunrooms, awnings, doors and windows, across Merrimack Valley towns and several southern New Hampshire border towns. The credentials are the sticking point. BuildZoom's page opens with an alert and a score of 0 because no active licence is on file: it lists his Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration #195323 and his construction supervisor licence CS-079969 as inactive, each at one point cancelled. His Houzz profile, which is entirely self-reported, presents that same CS-079969 as the business's licence number and shows no home improvement contractor registration at all, alongside a self-listed awards line reading 'certified construction supervisor instructor'. The praise on file is real but narrow. Two five-star BuildZoom reviews sit on the record and both appear to come from the same writer: one in December 2020 describing a $10,250 bathroom remodel — attention to detail, good communication, a price the reviewer called reasonable and a site left clean — and one from September 2012 calling him honest and hardworking. Houzz carries none. The permits are similarly sparse: a 2020 Haverhill deck replacement valued at $8,500, and a 2004 Framingham garage-to-bedroom conversion. So the first move is a paperwork question, not a price question. Ask him to pull up a current Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration and construction supervisor licence on the state's own lookups while you are standing there. If they come back current, that 2020 bathroom account is an encouraging read for a small, careful remodel; if they don't, that is the whole conversation.
