"One of our best contractors these last 40 years" is how a homeowner described Royal Contracting in an October 2023 review. Dermot McElligott owns and runs the Dedham company; the site says he renovated houses in Ireland before remodeling homes around Boston, and founded Royal Contracting in Dedham in 1999. The work is kitchens, bathrooms, painting, custom carpentry and general contracting across Boston's western suburbs. More than a dozen reviews between 2013 and 2025 come back to the same two things: the job finished on time, and it finished at the price agreed. Price is often how they win it in the first place — a February 2025 customer renovating their only bathroom said Royal's quote came in considerably lower than the three other contractors they had spoken to, and that Dermot was transparent about pricing. A November 2024 client who finished an attic called the company competitively priced. The projects run well past handyman calls. In a December 2024 review a repeat customer described a kitchen renovation in an unconventional space that landed right on budget; a September 2023 homeowner had an expansive IPE deck and pergola built, cable rail system included, at the advertised cost; and in November 2022 a customer said Dermot's carpenter, Fabio, replaced a fir rear deck with Azek and swapped out cedar boards on the front porch. The range is wide, which is the thing to pin down before you book. A June 2025 reviewer had a new two-story exterior staircase built; an April 2025 customer had interior painting and wall plastering done, with doors, mirrors and curtain rails hung, and said the crew worked extra hours to finish before guests arrived. Older Thumbtack accounts cover roofs: a June 2016 reviewer said Matt and crew were there within three hours of the call and fixed a leak around a vent pipe in under fifteen minutes, and a 2018 reviewer who found water coming through on a Saturday had Matt at the house by 11:15 Monday morning, quoting on site and repairing the roof immediately. For a Dedham-area bathroom, kitchen or deck where the quote and the date have to hold, this is a short-list contractor. Get the scope in writing and confirm who is leading your job before the first day.

The job was done timely and well for a reasonable price. I'm very happy with the final result of my new 2-story exterior set of stairs.
Internal house painting wall plastering and general hanging doors mirrors and rails for drapes. They arrived on time. Worked extra hours to ensure completion of the bucket list as we had guests arriving. I plan to use the service in the future
Great to work with. Had some minor siding repairs done. Quick, responsive and knew what they were doing. Very professional.
Everything was completed on time and with in budget. Great experience all around. I would most definitely use Royal contracting again.
We wanted to renovate our only bathroom and went with Royal Contracting after a lengthy process getting quotes. Their quote was considerably lower than the other 3 contractors we spoke to. From beginning to end, they were fantastic to work with. Dermot was transparent about pricing / schedule, and there were no surprises. They quickly set up a divider between the bathroom and kitchen so there was no dust and we could stay there when needed with no interruption. Fabio, who did most of the reno work, was a pleasure to deal with. He was always on time, got started early each day, and thoroughly cleaned. Outstanding attention to detail - he asked questions before moving ahead with anything to make sure it was done correctly. You can see in one of the photos that there is a tiny gap between the wall and door frame that he cut slivers of tile to fully cover - to me this is evidence of meticulous workmanship. The end result is exactly what we wanted, and we're so pleased.
