Massachusetts HIC registration is what gives a homeowner access to the state's Guaranty Fund on a residential job, so ask him directly whether the registration has since been renewed, and get the current certificate before any work starts. He is a plausible fit for small carpentry, painting and handyman work on the South Shore if you are comfortable being an early reviewer and doing your own diligence. Ask for the current HIC registration and a certificate of insurance, and for two or three recent local references you can call, since none exist in public.
