“SMI Demolition, Inc., a Norwood, Massachusetts demolition company, and its majority owner Charles Smith, Jr. agreed in August 2025 to pay $2.01 million to settle False Claims Act allegations that they fraudulently obtained pandemic relief loans by concealing Smith’s prior felony conviction for mail fraud. The settlement, announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, resolved a whistleblower lawsuit and stands as one of several DOJ enforcement actions targeting borrowers who lied on applications for Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan funds”

“On August 9, the government announced that Charles Smith, Jr. and SMI Demolition, Inc., of Massachusetts agreed to pay $2.01 million to settle False Claims Act allegations that the company falsely certified its eligibility for two PPP loans and an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) to the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) during the pandemic.”

“Charles Smith, Jr. of Sharon, Mass. and SMI Demolition, Inc., of Norwood, Mass. submitted false loan applications to the United States Small Business Administration (SBA), claiming that no owner had pleaded guilty to a felony involving fraud. However, Smith had pleaded guilty in federal court in Massachusetts to two counts of mail fraud in January 2018.”

“BOSTON – Charles Smith, Jr. of Sharon, Mass. and SMI Demolition, Inc., of Norwood, Mass. have agreed to pay $2.01 million to resolve False Claims Act allegations that SMI Demolition falsely certified to the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) its eligibility for two Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans and an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL).”

“Smith, who pleaded guilty to two counts of mail fraud in 2018, was part owner of SMI Demolition when it applied for and received over $1.4 million in PPP loans and an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). His company falsely certified that no owner had pleaded guilty to a felony involving fraud”
