One word does most of the work in Solid State Construction's reviews, and it isn't a compliment: expensive. "They're not the cheapest," a Reddit commenter wrote in a 2025 r/WorcesterMA thread. "Certainly not inexpensive," wrote a customer in March 2025 who had two houses done. "The product is expensive but you get what you pay for," wrote another. Customer after customer volunteers the price first and then explains why they paid it anyway. What they paid for is exterior work on older New England houses, and one material in particular. James Hardie fiber cement siding runs through the record like a spine — a May 2026 customer who took bids from several Hardie contractors, a 2024 job where the crew hand-painted trim pieces after a short order and the company issued a credit, a 1920 home stripped and resided, a 1950s house that also gave up its lead-painted clapboard. Roofing and windows sit alongside it: a 2025 re-roof chosen specifically because the company treated the attic and the roof as one ventilation system, and a January 2024 job of 17 double-hung windows and two casement sliders. Decks and a garage-frame restoration show up too. The Shirley company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active in its own name, and its Better Business Bureau file is an A+. The crew names repeat in a way that suggests real continuity — Chris and Nick as project managers, Adam, JC and Heidi on sales, Erika in the office, Jeff Brooks as owner. Several reviewers describe him showing up personally. The complaints are worth reading before you sign. In October 2025 a siding customer said the salesman promised a finish with no visible seams, that parts had to be redone because the crew had the wrong information, and that the project was delayed repeatedly. A 2023 account of a roughly $50,000 siding and balcony job alleges water damage and gouged hardwood floors, with the owner covering only half the cost of the second repair. A January 2024 Houzz reviewer alleges the company misled them about its certifications and botched the second of two jobs. And a May 2024 customer who spent $70,000 said four calls and an email about soffit water damage went unanswered — though they later updated the review to say the problem was fixed. One more thing to weigh: an August 2026 reviewer who never got a promised quote wrote that after they posted a poor review the company called and "begged" them to take it down. They did, still got no quote, and reposted. That is a fact about how the review record is managed, and it is worth knowing when reading a page full of five stars. The right call for a full Hardie residing, a roof, or a window package on an older house, if a premium price and a long lead are acceptable. Get the seam and trim detail, the change-order terms for rotted sheathing, and the warranty registration in writing before work starts.
“we had an outstanding experience with Solid State Construction when we replaced the siding on our house a few years ago. they're not the cheapest but they work fast and their PM visited every day or two to check in with us.”
This is the best experience I've had with a business. I'm widowed, on my own & was not confident of a company to choose. After much research, from the first phone call to meetings with JC & Markeis who are both wonderful; all went smoothly. JC especially followed me through this whole process and never thought my questions were unreasonable. I appreciate the workers and everybody involved; Chris measured up the windows, handled everything very professionally and I'm thankful that I found Solid State in Shirley, local to me which it's always a plus. Anyone looking for Hardie board siding or excellent windows please trust this company! Adam installed a side deck for me which was much needed and the result was excellent, & again Adam answered all my questions so thanks guys! Sis Carlson of Harvard
Probably not the best choice for a small job. I called for a quote, they came and looked, promised a quote, then nothing. So I left a poor review. That got their attention, so the called me back, assured me they’d get me a quote ASAP, and begged me to take down my poor review. I took it down, I provided them info they asked for, then I waited. And I waited some more. I’ve given up on them, changed my plans, and am leaving another review. Sorry guys, this one is staying. I will say that I have no idea of the quality of their work.
Though we were unable to actually move forward with the project we consulted on (nothing to do with SSC), we had a great experience with Solid State Construction. JC was a wealth of knowledge and provided very valuable information about siding and roofing materials and costs. We will absolutely hold on to their contact info for when we are able to purchase a house and we’d recommend consulting with them to anyone looking for exterior contractors. You guys were amazing and so incredibly helpful!
Solid State was great to work with from the start. Their sales person was not pushy, provided useful information as we went through the process of obtaining quotes, and their price was the best for the siding product we got. When it came time to do the work, their team made sure to meet with us, walk around the house and go over every detail. Like many houses, we had some curve balls to throw at them from a few rotted spots to some previously done odd trim to redo. The Solid State team came up with solutions, made sure to communicate with us all the way and worked long days to get the job done. Every job has at least one small snag or two, but when we had questions or concerns, they were quick to respond. I would certainly recommend Solid State Construction. Our next project is replacing gutters and will be reaching out to Solid State first.
The Solid State Construction Company constructed a deck for me, and I am very happy with the quality of their work. The team was professional, courteous, and a pleasure to work with. I was especially impressed with Adam, who stood behind his company’s work and responded promptly when a defect occurred. They came back and corrected the issue without hesitation. Their commitment to customer satisfaction was outstanding. Overall, I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for quality workmanship and excellent customer service. Sincerely, Valsamma Vargise
