St Nicks Chimney Services works on chimneys and holds 4.5 stars from 32 Google ratings. Its website says it has been in business 29 years and names Portsmouth and Portland as its service area. A recent customer with an older house said the two workers explained the reasoning behind the quoted work and described steps the homeowner could take to avoid further repairs. That customer said they had not been aware of chimney flue issues that could have sent CO into their child's room. A 2026 customer who heats with a wood stove said St. Nick's called the afternoon they reached out and came over right away. That 2026 customer said the cap was glazed and enclosed with creosote, and that the team cleaned everything, with one member inside and another on the roof. A 2026 customer said the crew installed a chimney liner and cap, did extra work to fix a flue issue from the previous owner, and communicated exactly what happened. A 2026 customer who had not yet had the service done said St Nick's quoted $175 where a different company had quoted $450 for a chimney inspection. A recent customer said that, in an attempt to resolve a water leak in their basement, Saint Nick's sealed one of their two chimney flues using two bricks and sealant. That customer said a second professional inspection identified the sealed flue as a safety concern they had to have addressed.
Both workers present for my contracted scope of work were nothing short of paragons of professionalism. Both were extremely courteous and respectful of my property/occupants. I genuinely don't understand why any other reviews for this business aren't all five stars and I can only assume it was customer error/hubris. This isn't someone making a PowerPoint presentation in their air conditioned office, this is hard labor and field knowledge wrapped in jump suits and rebreather masks thats able to save lives when properly utilized and they deserve to be paid promptly and in the format they pre-designate. Anything less would be insufficient for the level of service provided. Saint Nick's employee(s) were more than communicative with their actions and reasoning behind quoted work and, in my honest opinion, went above and beyond their scope of work by detailing additional steps that I, as a homeowner, could take in the interim to not incur further repairs down the line. Let me be plain, they COULD'VE just quoted me for additional work but instead they informed me of what I could do to prevent that additional repair bill, giving me the knowledge to take care of it myself. That's what they're being paid for. It doesn't matter if it takes one minute or one hour, information/knowledge is worth it's weight in gold. I'd highly recommend them to anyone that's interested in their services and in the area and I will forever hold them in high esteem for the work they did because I've got an older house and I wasn't aware of some chimney flue issues that could've dumped CO into my only child's room under the right exigent circumstances. Absolutely/unequivocally, 5/5 stars and a glowing recommendation.
I am writing this to share a concern regarding their service. In an attempt to resolve a water leak in my basement, Saint Nick's sealed one of my two chimney flues using two bricks and sealant. One flue went to my stove in my front room, the other to my furnace. Neither it appears, was a solid choice. I've never had anyone else work on my chimney. While the intent was to stop water entry, sealing a flue is a safety concern that I had to have addressed after a second professional inspection identified the issue. Blocking a ventilation source with masonry and sealant is not a standard solution for a drainage problem and created a hazard I was not expecting. Thank god for Ring Cameras as I am sure they will deny. I am sharing this so other homeowners know to verify that any repairs to their chimney or flues maintain proper safety and ventilation. I would recommend getting a second opinion on any structural "fixes" involving your flues to ensure the home remains safe.
I heat my home with a wood stove and when the stove started smoking I knew it had to be cleaned. St. Nick's called the afternoon I reached out and came over right away. My house is a garrison style with the stove pipe straight up through 2 stories and the insulation filled attic. I had a huge blockage at the top - the cap was totally glazed and enclosed with creosote.. the pipe was bad too. The team cleaned everything like new. They were professional, knew the business and like aways, had a member inside and another on the roof. I always had had my pipes cleaned by Chimney Sweeps of the Finest Kind until they retired. Another business "cleaned" my stove last year , from the bottom up.... I am relieved to have a business with staff who are experienced and know what they are doing and don't leave me with a problem. I recommend them without reservation. Thank you!!
Very responsive, kind, and professional with respect to setting up the appointment, showing up on time, and executing the job completely. The crew did a very good job with our chimney liner and cap install. They even had to do some extra work to fix a flue issue from the previous owner. They did this with ease and communicated to us exactly what happened. Very happy with the quality of work, the speed, and the price. I'll be recommending them to friends and family.
Haven't had the service done yet - will update. Originally I called a different company who quoted me $450 (holy crap) for a chimney inspection. St Nick's quoted me $175, and Candace was very friendly and helpful on the phone. Glad to have found a company who's not looking to screw over their customers.
