Eight reviews across four sites, every one of them positive, and not a single one written in the last seven years. That is the shape of Stateside Carpentry — John Pryce's one-man-plus-two carpentry outfit run from 21 Owencroft Road in Dorchester. The work is carpentry first: framing, finish carpentry, deck repair, decks and porches. BuildZoom's permit trail runs to 13 jobs from 2010 to 2024 spread across Boston, Milton, Somerville, Cambridge, Braintree, Marshfield, Waltham and Brookline, so the business has been pulling permits recently even though the reviews stopped. Its BBB file lists a broader home-improvement mix — additions, siding, windows, kitchen and bathroom work — alongside the carpentry repairs. The customer record is uniformly good and uniformly old. Angi and HomeAdvisor both show 5.0 from 7 reviews, but they are the same seven bodies word for word under the same listing id, so read them as one set rather than two. The praise centres on decks and porches, and on Pryce himself. BuildZoom carries one more 5-star review, older still. BBB grades the company A+ on a file that is explicitly not accredited — those are two separate facts, and neither is a customer review. The file says 27 years in business and a start date of 1999, run as a corporation with three employees; Angi's profile claims 10 years of experience, which does not square with it. On paperwork, BuildZoom lists Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration #186463 for the business and describes it as active as of March 2026 — but it also lists a second number, #147785, which it shows as inactive and says the state had cancelled at one point. Neither was confirmed against the registry here. If you want a carpenter for a deck, porch, stairs or trim work in the Boston area, this is a small shop with a long permit history and no complaint on file anywhere. Ask for recent references and confirm which registration number is current with the Office of Consumer Affairs before you sign.

John was great. Honest, hardworking, and fair. It is truly hard to find a good carpenter who is honest and fair. John the owner of stateside should be on your list of people to call for a quote.

Mr. Pryce is a very talented carpenter and did such an excellent job on the new stairs, railing, and landing that we have requested that he return for another project.
