Four people have written warmly about Stephen Wildes. One has written something that should stop you cold, and both things are true at once. The warm side first. In March 2022 a homeowner described him redoing an entire kitchen — helping choose the cabinets, coordinating the plumber, electrician, flooring and granite crews so they arrived when they said they would, and finishing in two to four weeks. In June 2019 a customer hired him for what they assumed was a simple job, stripping bead board and a chair rail out of a dining room, and found there was no wallboard behind it; he replaced the lower half, taped, mudded and sanded it, and the painter arrived to find nothing to prep. A 2015 reviewer had their master bath and kitchen remodeled. A 2013 one had a garage and studio built and called him a real pro with an eye for design. The other side. In December 2018 a customer described a $150,000 remodel of an antique home involving roof repair and repair of a rotted addition, and wrote that after the permits were pulled no inspections were carried out for the remodel, electrical, plumbing or HVAC, that the house was left with no roof and partially collapsing from water damage, and called him a thief. That is one customer's unresolved account, not a finding by any authority — but it is specific, it names the failure, and it is the most decision-relevant thing anyone has written about him. The licence position deserves attention alongside it. His Massachusetts construction supervisor licence, CS-008984, is shown as active — BuildZoom's own check, not the state's. But both of his home improvement contractor registrations, 105115 and 181246, are listed as inactive and cancelled. That registration is what covers nonstructural residential home improvement work in Massachusetts and what gives a homeowner access to the state Guaranty Fund if a job goes wrong. Ask him for a current registration number and verify it yourself with the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation before signing. The work itself is substantial and recent enough: 33 permits, seven of them in the last three years, typically around $59,000. A 12-by-22 kitchen addition in Hingham in 2024 at $180,040. A kitchen, living room and second-floor bedroom and bath extension on Bay Avenue in Marshfield in 2021 at $355,000. A 2024 Marshfield job to rebuild a deck, replace windows and doors, re-shingle the siding and redo a bathroom and laundry — that permit's status is listed suspended. Who this suits: someone doing a defined kitchen or bath project on the South Shore who will put the 2018 account to him directly, get the registration confirmed with the state, and hold him to written inspection sign-offs at each stage.
